Got this from Wiki so take it with a grain of salt.

Venom's first appearance in a motion picture was originally to be as the star of the now defunct film, Venom, written by David S. Goyer and produced by New Line Pictures. Venom would have been portrayed as an anti-hero, and Carnage would have been the villain. The script was not produced, and the film rights to the Venom character ultimately reverted to Sony. A Daily Bugle photographer named "Eddie" was mentioned in the first Spider-Man film, likely an allusion to Brock. This character contradicts the third movie as it treats "Brock" as a member of the staff when the third film Brock addresses himself as "the new guy". He was included after Avi Arad convinced director and story developer Sam Raimi to include him. Fans have also expressed their desire for Venoms' "son", Carnage, to be in a future film. Avi Arad has begun plans on a Spider-man 3 spin-off featuring Venom as the main character. No other characters have been confirmed and the plot is currently unknown. Topher Grace does not wish to star in it becuse most super-hero spin-off movies are unsuccessful

I broke this news back about a week after SM3 opened. It is meant to tie into Spider-Man 4 and 5. There were a number of articles about this early on where Topher said he wouldn't do it.

But in this interview with Avi Arad from July 24, 2007 Arad actually says (and I quote) "I'm making Venom."

I've also heard the target date for SM4 is June 30, 2010 which would put it head to head with Transformers 2.

I think all the governments in the world need to pool their funding together to focus on a time machine so we can go back in time and make sure the ENTIRE Symbiote and Symbiote related story line is never sent to the printer.

I think the symboites are the one of the best and most exciting parts of the Spider-Man storylines.

I agree, since they are also particularly symbolic as well. I mean, SM3 tried to play off of the symbolism, but I'm sure it would've been better received if the film was more popular among fans. I'm not really keen on a Venom spin-off since I think it would do poorly, but I'm not against him coming back in future Spider-Man films. In fact, I anticipate it.

Yeah i think the symbiotes, atleast Venom and Carnage in the comics are great. But Venom didn't fair to well in the movies so far. And i blame Arad for that. But maybe they can somhow rectify that in the future but i'm still a bit nervous about the idea of trying to invole either Venom or Carnage in the film anymore.

Same here. The symbiote are horrible part of Spidey story next to the Clone Saga. No more symbiote in the next films please. Keep it in the comics instead.

Hmm. I could be a good idea if they make it right. I would definitely go see it if the trailer for it even looks decent. If nothing else, it would help on the wait between Spider-Man films since they're trying to tie-in w/ the films.

Sounds like a kiddie idea like Chronicles of Riddick. Pitch Black was good then the made that and it lost something. So I take it venom would be the anti hero. I would rather a return of him in a Spidey movie rather than a silly spin-off there just money making films and I dealt it would be good. But then again if Raimi not directing it might be worth watching the true venom if they get him right.

He would have done a better job than Raimi if he could direct.
