BIGBoy4Shizzle said: So what did you all think? Just got back from the midnight showing. Didn't think it was the best movie ever but definitely a lot better than Ang Lee's version. Weird thing is...apparently people thought the first one was too dark but I thought this was a lot more so.
Agreed. Certain parts did feel more light hearted and there wasn't as much camp compared to Lee's, but it did feel darker and more brooding in many areas. Definitely an improvement as far as story, dialog, acting, and overall portrayal in regards to the comic book, but the CGI in a handful of spots was not up to par. The final battle was great though. No denying it. Much better than a lightning man or demon poodle.
My biggest issue would have to be
how Betty seemed to show more love and concern for Banner than he showed her. Hulk showed a lot of for her, but Banner just seemed to be sort of distant. Maybe that was on purpose, but it took a little away from the story for me.
I'm quite excited for the sequel which is obviously going to happen and for how things eventually turn out with Avengers.
I give it 4 out of 5. Not as good as Iron Man, but a step in the right direction where Hulk is concerned. A nation of sheep will beget a government of wolves." - Edward R. Murrow

This...THIS...is the "Hulk" movie I've been waiting to see!!
I have to give Mr. Leterrier, the director, major props. He sure knows how to make a h*ll of an excellent action film, especially one with an actual STORY. I also have to give double thanks to Edward Norton for a.) being THE PERFECT Bruce Banner this side of Bill Bixby himself (with no disrespect intended to Eric Bana fans, but Norton's skinny, nerdier, smart, haunted Bruce Banner is just gold here), and b.) for re-writing Zak Penn's story, though he doesn't get credit for this film. I also have to say that Liv Tyler IS Betty Ross, and she was a much better character than what Jennifer Connelly was dealt with the 2003 film. While I prefer Sam Elliott over William Hurt for General Ross, Hurt's Ross is just as good and even more of a p***k than the 2003 Ross, which is better in my opinion.
I also love, love, LOVE that
Lou Ferrigno pulled double duty in this -- first as a pizza-loving security guard (and his interaction with Norton's Banner is so perfect it just makes you smile), and as the voice of the Hulk (though, sadly, he only gets two lines of dialogue that I made out -- "Betty" and, my favorite, "HULK SMASH!!!" I have goosebumps just remembering the delivery of the line. Stan Lee's cameo was pretty good, too, and completely not what I expected. Also, Bill Bixby himself pops up in the film, but it's not what you think.
Now, the fight scenes -- OH, H*LL YEAH!! I dare anyone NOT to love the Hulk/Army daylight fight and especially that final battle. OH, that final battle. It's right up there with the train sequence from "Spider-Man 2".
And FINALLY, Hulk has a WORTHY villain that can HURT him. Tim Roth is great as Emil Blonsky, the Russian-born, England-raised spy who eventually, inevitably becomes the Abomination (though he's never called that). Abomination is creepy cool and one of the better comic-to-film, truly hateworthy villains to date. It's not like they messed him up too much, like the Ah-nuld Mr. Freeze.
Plus, we have GREAT Easter Eggs, with
Ty Burrell's Doctor Leonard Samson, Tim Blake Nelson's Samuel Sterns (and I was NOT expecting his final on-screen moments at all), the Super-Soldier serum mentions, SHIELD, AND Robert Downey Jr.'s cameo as Anthony "Tony" [Iron Man] Stark -- oh, my!! Even Jack McGee is mentioned!!
Another wonderful thing is Craig Armstrong's wonderful, epic, tragic, sometimes beautiful score. While Danny Elfman did a great job with "Hulk", sadly, this is better. Armstrong hits all the right cues, especially with the
Betty/Bruce part on the helicopter, where Bruce has to try to save innocent people from Abomination's rampage and plunges to the ground.
It's definitely worth getting as a CD (or in this case, as a 2-disc soundtrack, if I remember correctly).
Now, one huge plus is the humor. There IS humor in this, and -- GASP!! -- it WORKS! It's actually FUNNY!! The best moment is early on involving
Bruce mentioning being "hungry" -- I won't ruin THAT gem for you.
Finally, there's the Hulk. That CGI, nitpicky Hulk. I LOVE HIM!!!
THIS is the Hulk people want to see. He's big, he's muscular, he's not a green Stay Puft Marshmallow Man with green hair -- he kicks a**, smashes and smashes and smashes some more (and often -- much to everyone's delight), he protects Betty and has some great, genuinely touching moments with her -- he does all the things you wish Hulk did in the 2003 film, and more.
However, there are some things I wish they did include:
- The film should have been longer. The film is a great action-packed comic film, but so much of it is left out and it shows. Especially with Ty Burrell's woefully little seen Leonard Samson. His interactions with Bruce Banner are cut COMPLETELY out of the film, and the memorable banter between them in the TV spots and trailers is some of the best moments they had -- but they're absent. Too bad.
- Uh...WHAT HAPPENED TO ABOMINATION?!? Hulk knocks him out, leaves him to the Army -- AND THEN WHAT?!? Is he contained? Did Ross somehow order him killed? Will the mixture treatment of the Super-Soldier formula and Bruce's blood samples be the combo that kills him? Head scratching, to say the least.
- THE "HULK" TV THEME IS TRIMMED!! The big hype I heard was that it would be in the film, but it's not in its entirety. For those that wanted to hear ALL of Joseph Harnell's classic "Lonely Man" theme from the Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno show, like me, will be disappointed to learn it's shortened. It wasn't even heard in its entirety in the end credits. There's no excuse for that.
- The finale. THERE'S NO EXTRA SCENE AFTER THE END CREDITS. I know the scene with Captain America was cut out, but D*MN, I wish they'd left it in!! I mean, "Iron Man" made fanboys and girls squeal with delight at the sight of Nick Fury, and while we get the mentioned Stark cameo just before the end credits roll, there's no "SURPRISE!!" scene AFTER the credits. What a shame.
In all, "The Incredible Hulk" is a solid, smashing good time. It gets 4.75 stars out of 5, it is an "A" if I had to grade it, and it's THE movie you should see this summer.
Take THAT, "Kung-Fu Panda"!!
SEE THIS FILM!! NOW!!!

Someone needs a chill pill. Oh, and just how are we suppossed to know if a movie's good or not without comparing it to other movies? Number rating systems are flawed, so the best way is to compare them to other movies. And its human nature to compare similar things. When TDK comes out, it'll be compared to Iron Man, SM2, BB, X2, etc.

My Review I Posted Over At boxofficemojo.com in the grading movie forum :
I really liked this movie. Was it better than Iron Man, no. Was it better than Ang Lee's Hulk from 2003...hell yes. The Incredible Hulk ( 2008 ) to Hulk ( 2003 ) is the same as Batman Begins ( 2005 ) to Batman and Robin ( 1997 ) in terms of quality, and hopefully box office run --> smaller opening, but way better legs. Hulk 2003 leaves you dissapointed and confused, and it was boring as hell, but this new movie left me bored for like 5 minutes, where the 2003 film left me bored for over half the film, thats a really good improvement. IN FACT the only thing I missed from the 2003 Hulk film is the green Marvel logo in the beginning of the film, they should've left that be. There are so many things that are awesome in this film, the action, the story, the score, the casting, the references to Captain America, Iron Man, and The Avengers, and the cameos of Tony Stark, Lou Ferrigno (who has a cameo and does the Hulk's voice ) , Stan Lee, did the 2003 film have any of that stuff being as awesome as this movie...no. I can't wait for an actuall sequel to this movie instead of another reboot, which is confirmed to get a sequel so yeah, this movie is awesome, and i cant wait for Incredible Hulk 2 & 3, and The Avengers (hopefully Hulk is in it)!!!
The Incredible Hulk ( 2008 ) --> B+ Best of 2009:
1. Transformers 2 - 10/10
2. The Hangover - 10/10
3. 2012 - 9.5/10
4. Paranormal Activity - 9.5/10
5. Fast and Furious - 9.5/10
6. Friday the 13th - 8/10
7. Monsters vs Aliens - 8/10
8. Wolverine - 8/10
9. Terminator 4 - 8/10
10. Law Abiding Citizen - 8/10

I am starting to getting annoy by Batman fans(The ones that allways keep saying TDN is going to be better, on and on), Hulk is a grown up movie, diferent than ironman, and is posible than TDN will be as dark as the Hulk. I enjoy this Hulk movie, the final fight was epic, is not perfect, but is good

matacron said: Hulk ... box office ... SMASH! That's what fanboys predict anyway. The Hulk has finally been given a villain that can give him a run for his money, but still there's a feeling that something's missing. It's better than the first film, but that's not saying much. If the Hulk returns, Marvel should add him to the upcoming Avengers movie. But please don't make another Hulk movie. We wouldn't LIKE IT if they made another Hulk movie.

And here is where we politely agree to disagree, Matacron.
I WOULD like it if they made another "Hulk" movie. I'd love to see what they do with the returning characters (Edward Norton, Liv Tyler, William Hurt, Ty Burrell, Tim Blake Nelson) in a sequel.
This is my favorite film so far this year.

Fair enough.
But you must admit, the Hulk isn't really all that rounded a character. There's only so much you can do with "Hulk smash!" and "Puny humans."
The 2008 version is RADICALLY better than the 2003 version, I'll be one of the first to admit, but if Hulk is the "strongest there is," then what kind of challenge could any villain really give him?
