| How excited (or not) I am to see this movie... |
|
First of all T3 did what I never thought it could, not only did it avoid destroying an already perfect film series but it actually sensibaly progressed it and made the 2nd make more sense. The fact we find out that Judgment Day was simply delayed explains why John Connor didn't just vaporize in the steel works at the end of no. 2!
I have tried to pick apart T3 in my own head so many times as I am such a big fan of the first 2 installments. However I personally can't find fault, it feels and plays just right!
T3 was a great piece of indulgent cinema in its own right but it ties so nicely into the history of the other 2 movies that you can't help but feel this has been made with real care.
The T-X I thought was superbly executed by Kristiana Loken and Arnie really did still look and act the part regardless of his age. In my mind the T-1000 will always be the standout villian (as Patrick was just sooo good!) and also very hard to contend with in his technological capabilities. However considering this I think the T-X is a logical and believeable upgrade over the T-1000's abilities. Whilst the 1000 had the complete flexibility of shape shifting without an endoskeleton, its almost like the machines have said lets go back a step and incorporate the liquid metal idea with the endoskeleton as the previous model did have its shortcomings. Then incorporating the advanced control over machines and firepower facilities in a sexy chassis made her a very dangerous threat indeed.
I like the fact that in the first movie the T-800 was more machine like in his manner of tracking down Sarah Connor (a relatively early model terminator and the first real model that could pass for human). Then the T-1000 which was far more sophisticated (almost like the machines wet dream!), calm and ruthless in his tracking of John Connor but very deceptive with it. And finally the T-X, the latest model with all new toys and a bitch attitude to just get the job done - aint nothing gonna get in her way and everyones gonna know about it!
I'm a great fan of continuity and was initially gutted when i heard Edward Furlong was not to portray John Connor, despite being the appropriate age. That was until I saw Eddie in a recent TV interview and realised his attitude and problems alone could have killed the franchise dead. The new casting was justified further when I finally witnessed Nick Stahls awe inspiring performance as John connor, he gave just the right emotion and feel to the character! Kate Brewsters history was the weakest link in the plot development for me but Claire Danes also did complete justice to her role. My only wish in hindsight is that in T2 John could perhaps have now a made an offhand comment to his mate in the garage (at the begining) about a girl he hooked up with last night (Kates name need not even be uttered!). That would just strentghen that weaker plot point for me.
Anyway moving on, the end of T3 did what it should, it bought us up to the key moment that we have been working towards throughout these movies. Where will chpater 4 now start? I would like to think they would keep with the gap of 10 years or so to provide a consistency. They could completly make this movie without Arnie now as long as they made references to all of the moments in the history that are required with the story that they choose to tell. To me the third film made this whole franchise bigger than Arnie, the star of the 3rd film is the story! I personally now view this entire franchise as a five or 6 part story that we are currently only half way through. Obviously the natural aging of actors is restricting but to some extent we have to accept this to enjoy the story being told. I would like to see Michale Biehn in maybe the 4th, 5th or 6th installment and how he interacts with John Connor, he certainly has more of a story to tell.
I find the fact that the story is coming full circle and opening up more doors than simply being a film about a terminator exciting. I for one don't want to see Terminator film after terminator film that has little difference and gradullay becomes worse as the numbers increase like many franchises i could mention. The next films could have a more war based theme. The thing they have got to do is SHOW us all the things we have been told about in the journey so far, like time traveling, reprogramming, etc...
I have complete faith in Mostows vision after seeing T3 and can't wait til this project is green lit. I would personally find it perfect if Mostow did T4 and then both him and Cameron collaborated on a T5 bringing this tory to an explosive conclusion. Never gonna happen (But then again I never thought T3 would be worth seeing!) |
