I don't really agree. It's definitely the twelfth star trek movie but it's not star trek XII nor was Star Trek (2009) imo Star Trek XI. The movie was awesome, but it just doesn't deserve does titles because it's neither a sequel nor a prequel, it actually erases the previous story lines (all trek related story threads except for ST:E) it is actually a spin-off, a reimagining, a reboot. A seperate series within the franchise. (kinda like the new wolverine flick isn't called X-Men 4) The fact that Spock's story goes on from one continuum to the next isn't enough, it's more like the odd one out.
I know I'm just splitting semantic hairs here but still; calling the movies Star Trek XI & XII implies a continuity that simply isn't there.
Couldn't agree more. Call the new Star Trek series what you want, but it will always be something alternate to what was before. Eleventh movie, yes, but to say it to be a continuation of the previous films does injustice to them.
Not according to Star Trek Countdown (Graphic Novel) or Star Trek Online. Apparently both you didn't bother checking out my link. Sorry I disagree with both of you. Star Trek Countdown is the only book I accept being part of canon even Gene said the books never are.
On Trek Timelines
"For the purposes of the Star Trek canon, the new Star Trek movie could probably best be classified as a sequel to Star Trek Nemesis. The 10th Trek film takes place in the year 2379. Although the new Star Trek movie starts with the destruction of the USS Kelvin in 2233, the events described in the memories of both Spock and Nero are from 2387 or eight years after Star Trek Nemesis.
In the new Star Trek movie, Nero goes back in time from 2387 and creates an alternative timeline. Time travel and altering the past are nothing nothing new for Star Trek ("City on the Edge of Forever", "Yesterdays Enterprise", "Year of Hell", etc), but what is different is that by the end of the film, the alternative timeline was not 'reset.' Some fans have thought this new timeline as writing over or erasing the original (or 'prime') timeline. However in interviews with TrekMovie (and others), as well as in multiple online discussions, writer Roberto Orci has made it clear that in their Star Trek universe, the incursions of Nero and Spock created an alternate timeline, which will coexist with the 'prime' timeline (not unlike the 'Mirror Universe').
This means that stories can still be told in the prime universe at any time, including after Spock and Nero leaving and the destruction of Romulus. The project this has the most immediate affect on is Star Trek Online, the massive multiplayer game set in the 25th century due to be released in 2010. In order to clarify things, the people at Cryptic have created a special section of their official site, which includes the following chart explaining it all."
Stories in both
"Although the above post and graphic are related to the Star Trek Online MMORPG, they are applicable to all of the Trek franchise. That graphic may be on the STO site, but it is essentially the official CBS and Paramount position regarding the new movie and its affect on the original timeline.
This is especially important to both the comics from IDW and the books from Pocket Books. In fact the Star Trek comics have already dipped their toe into this territory. The entire Star Trek Countdown comic book series takes place in the prime timeline of 2387 telling the story of Spock and Nero and how they came together to fall into a black hole (sending them back in time). But the final two pages of Star Trek Countdown show Picard and Capt. Data on board the Enterprise E, making it clear that the Prime timeline continued on, even after Spock and Nero went back in time."

Check this video out. It has something to do with the timeline.

Well it's all your opinions of saying that Star Trek (2009) is just a separated universe/series from the one that we all know and loved. However to me Star Trek (2009) is a sequel, prequel, and reboot all in one since I'm the one actually have read Star Trek Countdown (Graphic Novel/Comic Book) which is a sequel to Star Trek Nemesis and prequel to Star Trek (2009). Star Trek Countdown is a bridge from the prime timeline and to the alternate timeline.
I don't know if I told you all this or not but I have watched all Star Trek - The Original Series, The Animated Series, The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, and all 11 Motion Pictures. So all in all, I have seen all 737 episodes/movies of the entire Trek universe (the 43 years of it). Of course I won't ever remember all of it but most of it though. I own all of them on DVDs and I just pre-ordered Star Trek (2009) on Blu-ray Disc and I can't wait when it gets here and oh I just got invited to play the closed beta test of Star Trek Online yesterday! So you can really tell that I'm really devoted Trekkie/Trekker!

But that's exactly my point now imagine they made number 12 in the alternate timeline, for some reason 13 is picards adventures with B4 in the retirement home on Risa, and 14 would return to the alternate timeline, well then you'd have a glorious mess 11, 12 and 14 would be direkt sequels, but 13 wouldn't fit in the continuity.
I'm not saying that the new movie(s) are in any way, shape or form less than the old ones, just saying that the numerals don't apply here. Maybe they could invent something different, like Star Trek alpha, Star Trek beta . . . they could pull it off until omega.
And I'm aware that the alternate timeline has a status not unlike the mirror universe had, crossovers are probabely possible. But the mirror universe was always secondary, "the other universe", but now the alternate timeline is the prime timeline in the new movies, which imo justifies a new chapter in Trek ergo no continuation of the numbers as long as the "other other universe" is the prime one
and P.S. how can you say in the same paragraph that Gene Roddenberry said the books are never canon and say that you accept the countdown comic? I side with gene (and the writers of the new movie): knowledge from books has no place in trek canon -a utinam-
