Here's a thread to break it down a little.

Kirk: I thought Pine was good. He was interesting, and appropriately Kirk-ish. It's very tough to carry a movie like this, and I thought he did it well. The whole script and plot was weak, but he did all right considering.

Spock: Once again, tough shoes to fill. Quinto did about as well as can be expected. He didn't seem very mature to me, or wise in that Spock-like way, but he did what was asked.

McCoy: I like Karl Urban in general, and as McCoy, he didn't have to mimick mannerisms, he was always the 'conscience' of the crew anyway, the devil's advocate. "Well, what if it doesn't work, Spock?" etc. So from that standpoint, he did well.

Uhura: They needed a female character that could be in the forefront. The times demand stronger female characters that are yet appealing. Someone already said (Jim?) that she was there to appeal to female types or a different demographic. That's true, but she was good enough. I don't care about the romance, that's just a cop-out to the shippers.

Scotty: He could/should have been made much more central. Characterization was good. The mystery of the black hole/red matter/etc. are all physics equations that would have made more sense to have Scotty involved with early.

Sulu: He was all right. They could ahve given him something more to do as a helmsman/weapons officer.

Chekov: Hmm, characterization was OK, but again, he was a little out-of-sync, even in a re-boot.

Pike: This was a sound character. Perhaps the closest to the old Trek. He was a lot like Kirk would eventually evolve to be, and that's appropriate. He was Kirk's mentor.

Others...

Nimoy: Nice to see him, story line was flawed so he had little to do.

Nero: Bad Khan re-hash, except that his revenge was against Spock. Eric Bana is a good actor, but I disliked the way his character was written.

Again, I really had no problem with the characters themselves. The story, lack of interesting plot, clumsy introduction of characters to each other...they all let down the actors and the movie overall. A lot of very improbable situations all tacked on to one another does not a good story make.

Your turn...

Rostron

This is Scotty we're talking about here, not Geordi. I don't want or expect a bunch of pointless physics equations from Mr. Scott.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

yeah those were over-the-top, but I wasn't suggesting that. More of the mad inventor style of things that Scotty used to come up with on how to hold the ship together/escape. All they could come up with was 'eject the core'. OK, so...I hope there was a tow-truck starship handy after that...
