Overall, I think of my review would be negative based on a 'Star Trek' point of view. While I really enjoyed the movie while watching it, it felt more like a movie with 'Star Trek' characteristics rather than a 'Star Trek Movie. But that's for another post. I have a few minor complaints but one major complaint in particular really grinds my gears.;

Dr. McCoy snubbed in favor of Uhura.

There is absolutely no other character I could hate more now than Uhura. Was it really necessary for her to have a connected back story or to strip down in front of Kirk?

When I think of Star Trek, I think of the 'holy trinity' that is Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Karl Urban did an amazing job as McCoy, so why the amazingly short time on screen or being involved in the central plot?

The ad campaigns have only made it worse for me. Why is there such an emphasis on Uhura? A glass from burger king, action figures and one of four posters. What the heck is this?

Well so its an alternate time line, I hope that McCoy leaves the enterprise and creates a spin off film.

anyone got some other complaints or issues that are bugging them about the film?

Honestly, the only complaint I had with the movie was the choice of "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys during Kirk's chase. At that moment I had fears that this film was going to be too pop/cool oriented and forget the characters histories.

I was wrong. If I can only find one thing I didn't like about the film, and it was a soundtrack choice, that's pretty damn good.

I'm gonna have to agree here. Not entirely, but I do agree. I think there was a bit too much emphasis on her over McCoy, but at the same time, there wasn't as much emphasis as I THOUGHT there was going to be.

I also agree about Sabotage. I thought "If ANY music from my generation survives that many years into the future, I HIGHLY doubt it will be Sabotage."

Because apparently there will always be something to nit-pick at no matter how good the movie was.

btw, My "nit-pick" was what they did to Spocks's Mother, but since this is an alternate timeline, I'll let it go.

I've not actually seen the movie yet, unfortunately so I probably dont know what I'm talking about. But any changes to origins/characters before old Spock shows up wouldn't relate to a timeline change, because it is Spock that altered it?

My top movies of 2009

1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
2. Star Trek
3. District 9
4. Transformers 2
5. Terminator Salvation
6. Watchmen
7. Inglorious Basterds
8. Friday 13th
9. Monsters Vs Aliens
10. Angels and Demon's
11. Hannah Montana

I don't know why people should complain. Is not James Bond the same old formular used over and over again, well not untill Casino Royal changed it?
Is not Star Wars about the light Sabre fight at the end? It's all roughly the same blue prints, I know people here are sick of Mary Jane playing victim at the end of a Spiderman Movie already but this film is not that obvious.

But rehash or not, this Trek movie is for the new generation even though stories get retold in different ways with the same formular its always good verses bad.

Maybe people should stop pretending to be director when one little thing does not suit because being hang up on something really spoils the ride for you, learn to let go a little.

There are many flaws in Spiderman 3 for example in which the fans did not like and it's understandable on that scale of change. Sometimes with movies you can still like them but maybe not love them which is what people want, people want something that lasts and can be watched over and over again.

I want to watch this movie again for sure, I'll watch it on buy it DVD too.

Uhura got more screentime because Paramount wants this flick to also appeal to female demographics. In the movies and TV show she was always a backround character along with Sulu and Chekov. Being the only female in the film (what happened to Rand and Chapel?), of course they'd give her focus. Plus the whole thing with her and Kirk/Spock is for the hopes of getting those shipper fans in line.

My Film Rankings 2009
1. Inglourious Basterds - 5 of 5
2. Watchmen - 5 of 5
3. Moon - 4.5 of 5
4. District 9 - 4.5 of 5
5. (500) Days of Summer - 4 of 5
6. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - 4 of 5
7. The Hangover 4 of 5
8. Star Trek - 2 of 5

Personally, I thought Karl Urban stole the show, even in his somewhat limited screen time. I'd love to know how many hours of DeForest Kelley footage he watched prepping for his role. He had so many of DeForest's little mannerisms down, it was a little spooky. Uhura didn't bother me. I did think the new Chekov sucked, though. They need to recast that character. And hopefully it'll be someone with dark hair.

For those of you complaining about Sabotage being used. I highly urge you to take a look at this article presenting a very VERY interesting theory on why such a song would be used...

Not to worry. You'll be able to see lots of her very soon. She's playing Scarlett in the GI Joe movie.

I have no complaints, which is really saying something for me. I can usually find fault in even the best of films. Not this time.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Are you kidding me? I thought the guy playing Chekov freaking NAILED it. To me, and BatSTUD can back me up on me saying this, he was the most impressive in terms of nailing their character. Not even joking. The accent was a little thicker, but after the debacle he has in talking to the computer, I think it shows that Chekov will be working on his accent out of neccessity. So his accent being thicker is not a problem at all. As for hair, I'm over dealing with those issues.

I'll give you the accent. Including Chekov's "w" & "v" lisp/gag was funny. But other than that, I just didn't like him very much. He annoyed me. I thought Karl Urban as Bones was much more on point. I'll also grant that Chekov's problems could have been a product of the script. I'd give the guy one more chance just because of that, but that's it.

I thought that the climax wasn't as big as it should have been. The action scene over Vulcan was much better compared to the one on Earth
(how can Kirk and Spock transport right in the middle of the Romulan army, not get lasered, than defeat the entire ship?)
.

But that's just me.

The alternate timeline was actually started by the appearance of the Romulan dude before the start of the film. Kirk's dad was investigating some kind of "lightening storm" when the film opened, so the time rift originated before the movie started.

Saw it last night and my only complaint lies with the reviews

I've heard the phrase "Sci-fi epic" being thrown around.

Ok, now I've stated many times on these boards that I used to be a Star Trek fan til I was about 11, then I hated it and have hated it ever since.

BUT... I decided to go see it because the trailers looked promising and the reviews were impressive.

HOWEVER, even though I found the film to be enjoyable and it did rekindle a little of the love I had for Trek as a kid, it was absolutely no where near "epic"

Everything about the film felt small in comparison to other movies I've watched recently. If you were gonna call this an epic, you might as well call "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past" an epic too.

So, in conclusion. Great film (surprisingly good) but given way too much praise in my honest opinion.

Yeah they left Chapel and she supposed to be in love with Spock not Uhura! That was my only complaint. However, I was disappointed Vulcan was destroyed, it's the most important planet of the Federation like Earth and they let Spock's mother die! I hope they restored Vulcan and Spock's mother in the sequel or a later film!

Remember..Enterprise was just built...she could just not be a crewmember yet. Also, I'm fine with them destroying Vulcan..it changes the timestream so they can now make sequels without being strapped down to canon. It was a good move in my opinion. I hope they leave it as is.

I must say, despite all my doubts about the prequel idea, I really enjoyed the film, it had its flaws, but there is only one thing I really hated about this movie:

that car scene! all of it, it was completely unneccessary (kirk's rebelliousness is obvious from the barscene later) it looked incredibly fake and cheesy when he jumped out of the car and hung on to the edge. And that nostalgia just completely takes ye out of the film. It was pointless and didn't work.

Why???

That completely defeats the point of the story of this prequel, meaning if there was a sequel and those things were retconned it would have made this film absolutely meaningless and may as well have never happened.

You do get that this was an alternate timeline to the original Star Trek right? They explained it really well, hence things WILL be different to the original

I felt the opening scene with kirk's father was better than the ending.

Although I respect J.J Abrams I normally find his endings slightly anti-climatic. (but I did like the "spock to spock talk" )

I could nitpick but it was a very good film and i'm glad I saw it at the cinema.

Karl Urban was utterly fantastic but I think he got more screentime than what some people here make out. He also played a very important role in the film getting Kirk onto the Enterprise anyway.

It totally erased everything I knew including TNG (my most favorite Star Trek series ever), DS9, and Voyager. I want the TNG era to exist in this alternate timeline too. Without Vulcan I just don't see how Picard or Data will exist. Sorry, I'm just more attached to TNG than I'm with TOS. TNG was the one got me into Star Trek in the first place besides my dad. I will be okay with this alternate timeline. It will take me a while to totally adjust.

Overall I loved the movie and I just saw it again for the third time.

Oh I loved Scotty's little alien buddy and sorry Jim, he does not remind me of a Ewok from Star Wars. Parts of the movie reminded me of Star Trek The Animated Series especially Scotty's little alien buddy and the other aliens I saw in the background. Oh I noticed the Tribble that Scotty had too.

It was a good film. Very entertaining. Not epic. Even though I really liked it, it didn't meet the expectations built up by the hype surrounding it.

The one true fact here is there is no way this defeats Transformers in the box office war. I'm even shifting my opinion to say that Terminator could beat Star Trek unless all the action is in the trailers.

You know I noticed that George Kirk (James T. Kirk's father) reminds me of Commander Charles "Trip" Tucker from Star Trek Enterprise.

George Kirk

Charles "Trip" Tucker

That part of the movie with his father was pretty dramatic and definitely felt like Star Trek and it was one of my favorite parts in the movie.

Why???

That completely defeats the point of the story of this prequel, meaning if there was a sequel and those things were retconned it would have made this film absolutely meaningless and may as well have never happened.

You do get that this was an alternate timeline to the original Star Trek right? They explained it really well, hence things WILL be different to the original

You know how in the original Star Trek, Kirk's father was never killed and he proudly saw Kirk become captain of the Enterprise?
Well in this alternate timeline, things changed and Kirk STILL ended up captain of the Enterprise, WITH the same crew, etc. etc. etc.

Do you really think the writers WON'T find a way to link in all the spin offs there've been over the years to Star Trek in this new timeline?
Of course they will, they'll be a little bit different (which really I'd find refreshing rather than watch the exact same thing I watched years ago) but they will happen.

Btw, "without Vulcan I don't see how Picard of Data will exist"
No offense Mike, but you would be an AWFUL writer.
No imagination

Upon further review, I don't like how weak they make Kirk look in a fistfight. Other than that, it was great. And Chekov is easier to stomach the second time. He might work out after all. Karl Urban still steals the show.

Weak?

He took on five recruits of Star Fleet, who must have had much more training than him, and were clearly bigger him, in little room with God knows how many innocents in the way.

I think it's a testament to how strong he is and how good a natural fighter he is that he managed to walk after it with just a nose bleed.
