But is this now an "alternate reality" with the "new" crew or is it the old continuity? And if it's the old continuity, what was the point of postulating that this could be an alternate reality created by Nero's interference? Regardless, it was a damn good movie. My only gripe is the new Chekov. Dude sucks as an actor, and he's blond. I might give the guy another chance, just because I think that maybe the script didn't give him much to work with.

Best thing about the movie: Karl Urban's performance as "Bones" McCoy. I'd like to know how much footage of DeForest Kelley he watched prepping for his role. He had so many of DeForest Kelley's mannerism it was a little spooky. Speech patterns, body language, attitude, it was just an amazing performance to watch. And thankfully the script really let that shine through. All in all, I'd say I can't wait for Trek 12. But for the love of all things Trek, think about finding a dark haired Chekov.

It is a new timeline and an alternate reality.

In the end, it's up to you the viewer to make that call.

On the one hand, modern concepts of how the space/time continuum work would indicate that the Star Trek movie takes place in an alternate timeline. The timeline can never be changed. Any attempt to change events will result in the creation of an alternate timeline, totally separate from the original. This is the notion that is implied during the discussion on the bridge, and seems to be the intent of JJ Abrams.

On the other hand, we have traditional Star Trek concepts of how the space/time continuum work. In these stories, such as City on the Edge of Forever, Yesterday's Enterprise and First Contact, any change to the timeline in the past will directly effect circumstances as they exist in the present. Alternate universes exist such as the "Mirror Universe" where everyone is evil, half naked and has a goatee, but these aspects of the multiverse have nothing to do with changes made to the timeline.

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
