The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.
One of the big question marks this summer was whether J.J. Abrams' relaunch of Star Trek (Paramount) could successfully reboot the franchise created by Gene Roddenberry. With an eclectic cast headlined by Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto and with only one returning actor from the previous movies and television shows, Star Trek went into the weekend with overwhelmingly positive reviews and brisk advance ticket sales. After grossing $4 million in Thursday previews (screenings after midnight counted towards Friday), Star Trek pulled in an additional $72.5 million (estimated) over the weekend, averaging roughly $18.8k in 3,849 venues, including over a hundred IMAX screens. Going by estimates, the $76.5 million grossed by Abrams' relaunch in 3 1/2 days is more than five of the previous "Star Trek" movies made in their entire theatrical runs. A sequel to the movie has already been greenlit, so here's hoping there'll be an announcement soon about a release date.
The 20th Century Fox superhero prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, took a massive plunge in its second weekend, down 68% to second place with $27 million and a ten-day total of $129.6 million.
Matthew McConaughey's romantic comedy Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (New Line/WB) only dropped 32% in its second weekend, taking third place with $10.4 million and a running total of $30.2 million.
The Screen Gems thriller Obsessed crossed the $50 million mark with an additional $6.6 million, as it dropped to fourth place in its third weekend, while Zac Efron's age-switching comedy 17 Again (New Line/WB) held on well, dropping just one notch to fifth place with $4.4 million and a total of $54 million in four weeks.
Summit Entertainment's crime-comedy Next Day Air didn't bring in the urban audiences expected, opening with just $4 million in 1,138 theaters to take sixth place.
Seventh and eighth place were held by two DreamWorks films. The Robert Downey-Jamie Fox drama The Soloist and the animated Monsters vs. Aliens with $3.6 and $3.4 million respectively. The Soloist has grossed $23.5 million in three weeks, while Monsters vs. Aliens continues to be the top grossing movie of 2008 with $187 million.
The Top 10 grossed roughly $136 million, up 18% from last year when the Fox comedy What Happens in Vegas and the Wachowski's Speed Racer failed to take down Marvel Studios' Iron Man in its second weekend.
Of the limited releases reporting estimates, Carlos Cuarsn's soccer comedy Rudo y Cursi (Sony Classics), reteaming Y Tu Mama Tambien's Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal, brought in $211 thousand in 70 theaters (average of $3k per site), while the Salvador Dali biopic Little Ashes (Regent Releasing), starring Twilight's Robert Pattinson, took in $77 thousand in 12 theaters in select cities.

psycho1 said: Considering that i've NEVER watched Star Trek, its a safe bet that im not going to waste my 12.50 on a movie i might not even understand. With that said, the DL movie doesnt work, but if enough of my friends see it, ill go see it too. To me, this movie is meh, not that visually appealing to me to spend money on it.
I've never watched Star Trek either, I literally knew NOTHING about the "original series" beyond the the fact that Spok has pointy ears, Kirk is the captain, and Scotty is Scottish. There are several reviews, many of them on this very website, saying the same thing. Seriously, this is a movie for EVERYONE. So that's no excuse. Second: How do you know if a movie is or isn't visually appealing to you when you haven't actually seen it yet? Seriously dude, stop making excuses, read a wikipedia article about Star Trek, and just go see the movie. They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing..................... Oh, there they go

Well I dont know anything about Star Trek either, and for the same reasons you knew before the film minus Scotty (dont know who he is). Here are some of my reasons, NOT EXCUSES.
1. You said: "How do you know if a movie is or isn't visually appealing to you when you haven't actually seen it yet?". TRAILERS/TV spots my friend. I dont think the trailers are that good or got me hooked at the least, so its not for everyone like myself.
2. Not a space movie junkie, but ill give this movie some credit, that it looks some-what entertaining and action/battle scenes look ok BUT the battle scenes look too similiar to Ep.III (Star Wars) so im not going to go see the same space battle twice.
3. Not making excuses for not seeing a movie. To me, if it looks good, ill see it. Proof? Went to see Fighting (Had good fighting scenes), Fast and Furious, Dragonball (Yeah..... proved wrong), Wolverine, etc.
4. Not going to read Star Trek on Wiki which does not appeal to me or makes me more interested in it.
.....and
5. What difference is me watching a movie online, when most of you on here (just like me) WATCHED or DL the Wolverine workprint?! Seriously! I watched the workprint, LIKED it, went to the theater and watched the movie and gave them my 12.50 (well 25 with my gf).
Before any of you start pointing fingers at me, i will probably go see this movie in theaters after i see it online. To me, if a movie does NOT look good, i will not watch it. But if theres a movie that im considering watching, and its posted online, then im going to watch it and make up my mind if the movies good enough to go to the theaters and see it again. I did it for Wolverine, im gonna do it for Star Trek, and probably Angels and Demons. |

i am going to post this again
This movie deserve it, paramount deserve it.
I will say that this is the kind of movie that is made to adults that like fiction, and the kids will like it,it has a smart dialogue, interesting plop, good run time, and for the fans that complain about the changes relate to the vulcans, is well explained that this is a parallel star trek universe, alternative reality, and is probably the best they could do with this franchise.
For people that are not trekker like me, i enjoy it, the only complain is to see a couple of Aliens that belongs more to men in black, but that is irrelevant
4 out of 5 stars, or 8 out of 10, until now favorite summer movie, because is well done in all aspects, is not threaten the fans as stupids or looking for kids approval so pretext of "new audience", is not rushed or bad edited so it can have more showings,; Paramount respect the fans, respect the beloved characters and respect the franchise and like i said, it deserve to get a good Box office.

Honestly, I was giving you trouble because your post gave the impression that you were going to DL it, watch it on your computer, and let that be that. Which I thought was a pretty low thing to do, considering how awesome this movie is, and considering that it DOES indeed deserve EVERY PENNY that it makes (as do all of the crew members, the guys who don't get enough credit OR enough money). But if you DO plan on seeing in theaters, or paying to see it on home video, then I don't have a problem. And for the record, I DIDN'T download the Wolverine workprint. They call 'em fingers, but I've never seen 'em fing..................... Oh, there they go
