Ok, I'm just going to assume that everyone has seen the film, but if you haven't, I'm not going to use spoiler tags, so proceed at your own risk:

The Borg can now be brought into TOS storyline (or the next movie, whatever you want to call it) simply because of the black holes. It's the butterfly effect ...

Nero and Spock changed the future (and the past) by opening up THREE new black holes in the galaxy, at least ONE of which has been established as a viable time warp.

In the movie "Star Trek: Generations" it was established that due to the destruction of stars, "the ribbon," as well as numerous other ships, had to make course corrections due to the new gravitic conditions.

The creation of THREE new black holes would create far greater gravitic anamolies than the lack of a star would.

I'm not up to speed on my Star Trek mythology, so I don't know where the Borg are hanging out at the time of TOS, but wherever the Borg happen to be in the universe at the time, their direction might be altered in a course that would turn them toward the space that is known to TOS crew IN TOS timeframe.

It would also not piss off Trekkies because this new movie has just adequately established a NEW timeline without screwing with the OLD one, so nobody would cry "foul!"

Any thoughts/arguments?

Earlier in the timeline during Enterprise, the remaining Borg from First Contact send a message to the rest of them, who're still in the Delta Quadrant, alerting them of Earth. This is what makes them come to Earth in the first place, it just took that long for them to get there. And this still happened because it was before Nero came back in time. So if anything, with the change in time and the presence of the black holes, it might even take LONGER for the Borg to arrive.

I thought that Worf blew up the communications array before the message could be sent?

It happened in an episode of ST: Enterprise. They uncover some remaining Borg frozen in ice in the arctic who get awakened and assimilate a ship. They end up getting destroyed but they manage to send a message to the Delta Quadrant just before.

Sure, use the Borg. Why not? Though I think I would rather use the Klingons first.

The Borg are simple over used, I feel as if they're becoming to generic rather than a serious threat to the galaxy. Your idea could easily explain the presence of the Borg in future movies.

I'm going to have to go with everyone else on this one though, the Klingons are best suited for the sequel.

It doesn't work that way. The Borg are all the way in the Delta Quadrant and one ship hadn't even reached Federation space until the 24th century because that's how far away they are. Major events in Federation space shouldn't have any effect to the other side of the galaxy.

That would be like saying all these events changed The Dominion, who are thousands of light years away as well.

The Star Trek Encyclopedia speculates that there could be a connection between the Borg and V'ger, the vessel encountered in Star Trek: The Motion Picture; this is advanced in William Shatner's novel, The Return. The connection was also suggested in a letter in Starlog #160 (November 1990). The letter writer, Christopher Haviland, also speculated that the original Borg drones were members of a race called "The Preservers", which Spock had suggested in the original series episode The Paradise Syndrome might be responsible for why so many humanoids populate the galaxy. Coincidentally, in the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture (written by Gene Roddenberry), the V'ger entity notes that the Ilia probe is resisting the programming given to it because of residual memories and feelings for Decker. When V'ger becomes aware of this, it is aware that "the resistance was futile, of course".

Wikipedia

Although the Borg never visibly appeared throughout the original series or original movies, there is enough to suggest that they were present in some form. Abrams and the writers only have to take these suggestions to inspire or twist in order to be able to introduce the Borg.

It would be cool to see the Klingons, but of all the tv episodes and movies that I have seen, it's been the ones that include the Borg that I have actually enjoyed (Although I have yet to see the new movie).

My top movies of 2009

1. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
2. Star Trek
3. District 9

Id like to see the new star trek crew face the klingons in the sequel, im not an overly huge fan of the series but i feel that the Klingons have been absent in the past few star trek movies most because it was set during the next generation. But i could see the Klingons fighting Kirk.. Maybe this altered story line will see the new Wraith of Kharn

I've always been a bigger fan of the Borg than of the Klingons, but whatever.

Either way, I agree with one poster here when he said that creative writing could inroduce the Borg into the new timeline without pissing off the fans.

Klingons or Borg, I'm sure they'll get around to BOTH since they've made the first Star Trek movie in a very long time that's actually WORTH watching. They'd have to be incredibly dense not to pursue sequels.

I'd prefer not to see the Borg. This new film has started off on the right foot with Trek the way it's supposed to be. The crew of the Enterprise going after the enemy with fists flying and phasers at maximum. They take down the Romulans by beating the crap out of them and blowing them to bits.

If the Borg show up, I have a terrible feeling things are going to go back to defeating the enemy by rerouting power from the warp core into the main deflector array to fire a charged tachyon stream which will blah blah blah blah...

Of course that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
