WOW!!! This was by far the best Star Trek film I have ever seen. Yes, even better than Wrath of Kahn. Herresy, you say? Maybe, but that's how I felt when I walked out of the theater. I was blown away by it.
I should probabaly begin by saying I am not a huge Star Trek fan. Yes, I have seen most of the movies and I liked the Next Generation tv show. But I am not a Trekkie by any stretch of the imagination.
That said, this will probably be my favorite film of the yeat.
Much the way the latest Bond films reinvented the James Bond franchise, so does this movie. It takes everything back to its roots, cuts out the corny crap and amplifies the drama, action and wow factor. Each character gets their moment to shine and show why they belong on this legendary ship, but in the end, this is a film about two men who appear to be polar opposites...but who are more similar than eather will admit.
Spock is supposed to be all logic, yet he is constantly struggleing with emotional issues like being born outside of his race and having a human mother. Then later he deals with his romantic relationship with the very hot Uhurah. After that he deals with the loss of his mother and his home world. His breakdown and subsequent ass-kicking of Kirk is breathtaking.
Kirk, on the other hand, is supposed to be all emotion. Not true. He is far more calculating and strategic than he is given credit for. It is his brains and Spock's emotion that are the reasons they win the day.
My only minor complaint is that they wasted Bones and Scotty by not giving them more screne time. They were both great and I can't wait to see them in a sequel. Hell, Scotty didn't even join the film until about 2/3 into it.
Anyway, I loved the movie and I recommend it.

Just got back from seeing this movie (IMAX) and I have to say it was incredible. Awesome. Amazing. It had all the tech and action you expect from a summer blockbuster but still references the classic material enough that someone like me, who knows little to nothing about Star Trek, can appreciate all the one liners, the diversity of the crew, and the diversity of the Star Trek universe. The story was good, the cast was great, effects were amazing.
The writers (forget their names- but they did Transformers too, right?) did a phenomenal job turning this franchise into something you can pick up and become a fan of right away, regardless of not being aware of its' long history. They were smart not to have this film take itself too seriously (Star Wars Prequels, Spider-man 3, etc.) but still seriously enough were the characters and story is engaging. Great work.
9.5/10
