WOW!!! This was by far the best Star Trek film I have ever seen. Yes, even better than Wrath of Kahn. Herresy, you say? Maybe, but that's how I felt when I walked out of the theater. I was blown away by it.

I should probabaly begin by saying I am not a huge Star Trek fan. Yes, I have seen most of the movies and I liked the Next Generation tv show. But I am not a Trekkie by any stretch of the imagination.

That said, this will probably be my favorite film of the yeat.

Much the way the latest Bond films reinvented the James Bond franchise, so does this movie. It takes everything back to its roots, cuts out the corny crap and amplifies the drama, action and wow factor. Each character gets their moment to shine and show why they belong on this legendary ship, but in the end, this is a film about two men who appear to be polar opposites...but who are more similar than eather will admit.

Spock is supposed to be all logic, yet he is constantly struggleing with emotional issues like being born outside of his race and having a human mother. Then later he deals with his romantic relationship with the very hot Uhurah. After that he deals with the loss of his mother and his home world. His breakdown and subsequent ass-kicking of Kirk is breathtaking.

Kirk, on the other hand, is supposed to be all emotion. Not true. He is far more calculating and strategic than he is given credit for. It is his brains and Spock's emotion that are the reasons they win the day.

My only minor complaint is that they wasted Bones and Scotty by not giving them more screne time. They were both great and I can't wait to see them in a sequel. Hell, Scotty didn't even join the film until about 2/3 into it.

Anyway, I loved the movie and I recommend it.

I wish I saw this in IMAX. I bet that would have been amazing. There are several wide scope ariel scenes that I bet would have been brilliant on an IAMX. Enjoy!

Great review. I got back from seeing it earlier and loved it.

It's a very different ST universe from what we're used to. It's like they took the realism and grittiness of Star Wars and injected into Trek. I'm not saying it was needed, but it was a great change and made for an interesting new take on the show. The casting was also phenominal. Everyone of the main crew sold themselves in the parts, I can't fault any of them.

While I won't say it's the best Star Trek film, it was very good and indeed, ONE of the best.

My heart still belongs to probably either Wrath of Kahn or the Voyage Home.

I may piss off a lot of Trek fans with this, but I actually liked Voyage home as much as Wrath of Khan. It was just a fun movie. I remember laughing my ass off when Kirk was trying to use profanity.

I saw it in the IMAX on Thursday night. It was amazing. I think it is the best Trek ever. This one and the Voyage Home are both my most favorites now. I probably see it again next weekend with my other sister when I get back from Florida.

Oh hell yeah!

People often forget, but the original crew was just about having fun and being funny as having adventures and dealing with sci-fi.

That's what I always felt lacked from everything that followed was that sense of humor. TNG was really the only other crew that truly embraced that.

Voyager came CLOSE though.

That's my favorite Trek moment of all time. That's still my favorite of the movies too. Also, when Spock is in the whale tank as if it's something anyone can do, doing the mind meld with the whale. Funny stuff.

As do I. I've never really considered myself a "trekkie" before, but now I just might have to add that title to my geek resume.

I am a Trekkie by no means but, this is how I've always wanted the Star Trek franchise to be. I was blown away by J.J.'s vision. I think he NAILED it! Damn near perfect in my opinion.

Also...If you can, you should definitely see it in IMAX. While there are no true IMAX shots in the film, it is still breathtaking and LOUD!

I'm not a Trekkie by any means, don't really care for the series in general, but the story for The Voyage Home... how do I put this? Friggin' retarded. The fate of the world hangs in the balance because whales were not there to answer the stupid ship? Dumb.

100% agreed!

Seeing it in IMAX has to be the only way to go! A movie of this caliber and with all the eye candy, awesome!

Also, 100% agreed with Longshots review! Spot on!

Left the theater saying "Star Wars WHAT?!?!?!"

I was talking about the universe its set in. How Star Wars isn't an idillic eutopia, how everything looks lived in and the technology isn't perfect and needs to be banged to work sometimes. Star Trek has never really done that in my eyes like Star Wars did until this movie.

Just got back from seeing this movie (IMAX) and I have to say it was incredible. Awesome. Amazing. It had all the tech and action you expect from a summer blockbuster but still references the classic material enough that someone like me, who knows little to nothing about Star Trek, can appreciate all the one liners, the diversity of the crew, and the diversity of the Star Trek universe. The story was good, the cast was great, effects were amazing.

The writers (forget their names- but they did Transformers too, right?) did a phenomenal job turning this franchise into something you can pick up and become a fan of right away, regardless of not being aware of its' long history. They were smart not to have this film take itself too seriously (Star Wars Prequels, Spider-man 3, etc.) but still seriously enough were the characters and story is engaging. Great work.

9.5/10

I saw the movie, and I was impressed by how well it was done. It certainly does have the broad appeal that they were hoping for.

It did a good job of exploring the characters pre-histories, and gave lots of nice nods to the original series, but yet it kept its own style and scope.

As someone who gre up on the various older series, it was exciting, interesting, and fun.

Note to George Lucas: This is how space opera is done.

Yeah I like how they made sense of it. That there is a utopia earth but it came at a price. I prefer Star Trek being about mankind facing situations yet still showing the same flaws we have today. That's what TOS was about. Roddenberry kinda went over the top in TNG with his "no one in starfleet ever has conflicts".

too true, but they did try at the end

Voyager was definately full of "humanity is still humanity" vision, they had quite the amount of vendettas, jealousy, anger, greed and other human like emotions
