Those seemingly assiduous plans to relaunch the Mad Max franchise have come to an abrupt end.
In an interview with IESB today, Mel Gibson said the long considered Mad Max: Fury Road, has bitten the dust.
Though Gibson always suspected he may have been a little too old to reprise his role as the post-apocalyptic warrior (at one time joking that the character should be renamed Fat Max), director George Miller had convinced him to come onboard the fourth film a couple of years back.
The $100 million dollar film suffered some setbacks though (some say it was due to Mels reluctance to do it, others say it was due to security concerns related to trying to film in Africa while the United States and many other countries have tightened travel and shipping restrictions), and just when it was deep in pre-production, was pulled.
Gibson says itll never happen now.
They were talking about making one, I think you just watched it, he laughs, but, you know, I dont know. Im gettin a little long in the tooth for that one.
Miller told the press recently that hes now considering doing the film without Gibson, saying, There's a real hope. The last thing I wanted to do is another Mad Max, but this script came along, and I'm completely carried away with it."
Speaking of could put them back in the good books offers, Gibson is said to have recently knocked back an offer to reprise his role as that law-enforcing loose cannon, Martin Riggs, in a Lethal Weapon 5.
Oh no, I dont want to go there againoh boy was that done to death. I just want to do things that really give me a kick, he says of the series that put him on the Hollywood map.
Director Richard Donner is said to have an idea for a Lethal Weapon 5 that would be set within a 24-hour time period
"For Lethal Weapon 5 it would have to be a story that would be worthwhile, but I think maybe there is something out there, Donner said.
I could do one [this film] tomorrow, Donner said a couple of years back, later adding that hed like to put the franchise to bed properly.
Unless hes planning on having Chris Rock carry the film (because Danny Glover isnt keen on doing another either), the series has been put to bed as well as it will ever be. Unlikely to happen though, since Donner unlike Miller wont do the film without having Gibson onboard.
"If they want to go and make it without Mel well, go ahead and be my guest but it's not for me. Mel is Lethal Weapon," he said.
