September 25, 2001 — DVD File has posted a review for the highly anticipated and awaited DVD "The Goonies." How does it fair? Reviewer Cliff Stephenson speaks...
It's been sixteen years since the film's theatrical release, and time has been very good to The Goonies. It's a credit the talents of all involved that it remains so entertaining. The story by Steven Spielberg is epic and ambitious, the screenplay by Chris Columbus still as thrilling, clever and laugh-out-loud funny as it ever was, and the more than capable direction by one of my all time favorites, Richard Donner, holds up. Here, Donner was able to assemble a cast of young actors who are vibrant and charming, allowing us to root for them rather than being just another annoying bunch of 80s misfits.
Richard Donner is one of the few directors out there who really knows how to compose a film using the 2.35:1 aspect ratio and The Goonies is a perfect example of how great it can look. Presented in anamorphic widescreen, the film not only benefits from a widescreen transfer, it absolutely depends on it. The frame is vast and filled with wondrous imagery that would be all but destroyed in a pan and scan transfer. Thanks go out to Richard Donner and everyone involved in this disc for making sure that this film is seen in its entirety.
This is just a fantastic release in all respects. I think the presentation is above average for a film of this age and the supplements that Gaines and Thau have put together make this a can't miss release. Highly, highly recommended!! |
