MY official review of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.
I know, you've been waiting with bated breath for MY take on the movie. Well here it is. Read at your own risk!
No spolier tags people!
Now I've read the books many times. I think I've read, on average, each one around 6 times. Some more, some less, but on average 6 times. While I don't really rank them (if I HAD to I could) in order of best to worst, I can say that HBP wasn't the BEST of the series. Really it was a lot of filler with the ultimate setup for the final book.
Now onto the movie. I can honestly say this is the best of the movies. As far as adapted, I think they couldn't really do much else better. Would I have LIKED the big fight at the end of the book to be in the movie? OF COURSE! Would I have LIKED the Dursleys to be in it? OF COURSE! Would I have LIKED more dips into the Penseive? OF COURSE! Would I have LIKED to see Dumbledore's funeral? OF COURSE! Did any of that HAVE to be in the movie? Evidently not. I liked what they did with it.
First off, I DID like OotP, unlike most, and felt that David Yates is one of the best choices for these movies. His style is sleak and impressive, and he obviously calculates every single shot. Take for instance, Harry's arrival to the Burrow. The shot up the stairs with everyone popping their heads into frame was awesome looking and added quite a bit of hilarity to a seemingly simple scene.
This is also some of the best acting they've pulled off in any of the movies. Hermione especially has stopped raising her eyebrows with every line of dialogue she's given (Sorry if I just ruined GoF for anyone, but pay attention to it. It's horribly annoying).
They trimmed what needed to be cut, and kept some things I never imagined I would see on screen (like Dumbledore and his "stomach problems" when visiting Slughorn).
The essence of the book was still there, and the things they added, well, I was fine with. When they destroy the Burrow, at first I was like "really?" and then on further thought I realized this: They're setting up the foundation that NOWHERE is safe. It's like the first MAJOR death in Deathly Hallows
Hedwig
, a character NOBODY saw dieing, showing that no character is safe.
The Burrow's gonna be fine. They're wizards, they'll have that fixed up in a jiffy.
I've always been able to seperate the books from the movies. I love each of them equally for their own reasons. So when something gets cut, I don't care. I still have the books to get more out of the story. Am I worried about all the cliffs they've backed themselves into with the movies? Not in the slightest. Because as I said before, I have trust in David Yates. This was also the first of the movies that felt like a direct continuation from the previous movie. It started RIGHT after the last movie ended, and I feel that with that in mind, the next movie will pick up again, RIGHT where we left off with this one.
So as you can see, I loved this movie. I've seen it twice already, and may even make a trip to the IMAX for a third.
