I know I'm going to be VASTLY outnumbered in this opinion, but I didn't think that the fifth movie was the best one at ALL. It cut out SO many important things, and completely WRECKED the Cho/Harry coupling.

I think the best one so far would have to be Chamber of Secrets. It not only provided a WONDERFUL thrill ride, but also stayed closer to the book than almost any novel-to-screen endeavor that I've ever seen.

I agree. OOTP was not the best in my opinion. Though I also agree that chamber of secrets stuck close to the book more than any other movie, my favorite was prisoner of azkaban.

It is acknowledged that there is a huge canon of literature in the world, and one person cannot possibly ruin it.

4 Combined the world of 1+2 with the abomination that was 3
5 Continued on the path set forth by 4, but just didn't QUITE hit it as well
2 Just overall fun and entertaining, epic and very near the book
1 Being in this position makes it look like it was bad. It wasn't. I loved it, it turned me on to Harry Potter in the first place. It was a discovery and I felt like I was with Harry through his first year.
3 Took a well established feel and location and just pooped all over it. Felt the word "adaptation" was a word to be taken very lightly and decided to just change everything that we already knew for the sake of being artistic for artistic's sake. Please don't repaint the Mona Lisa sir, thank you.

Let's see, the first two movies were the closest to the books, but the acting could have been much better. The first movie, they introduced the series really well.

Third movie, the acting was much better, though not quite perfect. It was farther from the books also (Trelawney's prediction). And I hated how they changed Hagrid's hut and the Whomping Willow. Not to mention the new Dumbledore... man I miss Richard Harris...

Fourth movie was way off the books. They just kept to the plot and exaggerated in many parts, especially Voldemort's rebirth.

Fifth movie had to be shortened, but it ended up very close to the books. The parts they added, fitted in nicely.

Final decision:

No, I'm sorry but I have got to disagree with you there. Whilst the others may have been good for what they were. Nothing portrays, in my opinion the magic of friendship more than 3(except maybe five) sure there was a few things in it that weren't exactly strictly canon, but as with hitchhikers guide, it was never quite the same. They did an awful lot with the third film that wasn't strictly canon, as with four, but it worked in 3, 4 didnt really work at all for me. What 3 was, was the magic of people, not just the magic of magic, and the people are a very important factor in the books and the films.

Now, I may need to re-read the entire series (considering how I began it nearly 8 years ago!), and I also might need to run through all 5 films again, but I seem to have extremely warm feelings for movies 1 and 2. I loved the feel director Christopher Columbus portrayed for the opening 2 movies. Seeing as how they brought our beloved characters to life, they will always have a special place in my heart. In fact, they're pretty much tied in my opinion...they go hand in hand.

How can a movie not rock with Gary Oldman in it?!? POA (my favorite book, if I recall correctly) took a darker turn, as it well should have. No good storyline can maintain the security and naivety of youth forever, and director Alfonso Cuaron certainly took a departure from Columbus' original look and feel. I agree with previous posters: the main trio's acting got much better in this movie. And who couldn't like Hermione slugging Draco?

For some reason, I think the film I watch the least is Goblet of Fire (and don't assume that means I don't like it...I do). I'm not entirely sure why, but if given the choice, I'd rather put on 1,2, or 3 before it. For some reason, it falls into the category of "Mid-Series Lull" for me, as most mid-series movies do...however, mid-series movies often do have killer endings that make you so anxious for the following sequels (ex. Empire Strikes Back, Dead Man's Chest)...and this killer ending involved Mr. Ray Fiennes as Voldemort. Yikes. I've never been so eager to cheer for a villain! Although GOF isn't my favorite in the series, I have to say it was heart-warming to watch the main trio offer up some of their best emotional work yet (how can you watch the end of the ball scene and NOT reminisce about what it was like to have teenage crushes?).

I really, really enjoyed Order of the Phoenix. I dare say it might be my favorite, but I am still so taken with the first two flicks. Oh, to heck with it...I love ALL the movies! I can't rank them! They all have their own personality, and it may be like comparing apples to oranges!!!

I don't think there was a single boring scene in OOTP. As I sat watching the opening scene with the dementors, all I could think was "Wow, have I missed this movie series, and I'm so thankful to have it back!" Maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much...how long ago did GOF come out? It seems like forever. But OOTP took its steam and came back even stronger. Raise your hand if you think Ray Fiennes has brought us a performance/portrayal that will go down as one of the famous villains of movie history?

So...I can't rank 'em...I like them all.
