Some of you will remember that I did this for POA last year. It was great, so I'm doing it again.

Basically, it's a scene-by-scene discussion of the movie.
We'll start by doing 'The Riddle House' and everyone will post their opinion on that scene. Was it good or bad ? Any questions ? comments ? Then we'll move to the next scene and then the next until we have discussed all the movie.
But first there must be enough people interested. At least 3 or 4 I think. So who wants to join ?

Seeing as you neglected to put a SPOILER warning in the thread title then SPOILER tags will have to be used throughout.

Now, is this going to be an "analysis" thread or a nitpicking thread? If it's the latter then no thanks...

As the title says, it's an analysis. But it's also an open discussion, except that it deals with one scene at a time. So everyone will be quite free to say what they want. If someone wants to point out some nitpicks, fine.

So your plan *is* to go beyond just comparing it to the book? If so, then I'm game...

Great, so we can start now.

First scene...

The Riddle House : The moment the WB logo filled the screen, I couldn't help grinning to myself. The prospect of sitting through a Harry Potter movie has always been an awesome feeling.
My opinion on the scene : It was a fantastic opening ; creepy and foreboding as it should be. I liked Frank, but I would have liked to see him fall to the ground instead of the green light. I wasn't bothered by Crouch Jr.'s presence in the scene. Actually, I think it was a good idea to show him from the start, since the whole Crouch backstory was cut.

I'll be honest I am of the belief that a film is effected by the score for the film and the begining with the WB logo had that naff music that didn't, in my opinion, it didn't have any effect, there was no feeling in it, there was no sense of evil or anything ominous, it didn't sound like it would be the kind of film that it was, also the the Riddle house was cool, not bad for a pretty much derelict house. The bit where nagini appeared wasn't as I expected, originally from the book it sounded like he was shivering in his books, maybe it was a case of he was to caught up in the film with what they were saying in the room. Can I ask you something, in the film does he fully pronounce avada kedavra, cos all i heard was avada kedava, my tabs probably needed cleaning out. As for frank falling, and seeing him, i feel that instead of seeing him that the scene should have gone black and we should have heard a heavy thud, but that too is my opinion.
All in all this first scene was enjoyable, 3/5 for it, but the score only 2/5

[ hopefully they'll bring back John Williams]

I didn't think the music was bad. But I'm not an expert in music, so you may know better.

I thought The Riddle House was a fantastic opening. As the cast & crew have said this is more like a thriller then the previous films & it started out as such. In fact, when Frank looked out the window & just saw one light on did anyone else think of the Bates House when the camera panes up to the house right after the infamous shower scene?

Harry wakes up at the Burrow, they meet the Diggorys, then take the Portkey : Can somebody tell me if Harry tells Hermione about his dream ? cause I don't remember him doing that and I think he should have told her. I found it very weird that they all kept saying "Where are we going ?" and Arthur said "Haven't go the foggiest". Seriously, what was wrong with them ? I really liked Harry et al. making their way towards the Portkey. It was shot artistically with great scenery. I liked Amos Diggory. The Portkey was a great effect and for some reason, I found Arthur, Amos and Cedric kinda walking through the air very funny.

Note : We're not doing the campsite now. That would be the next scene.

I cant say i have much to say on this scene, it was indeed funny, i think the only thing outta place was cedric stuck up a tree, i mean was he looking for the portkey do you reckon, and no i dont believe harry ever divulged the contents of his dream except to sirius, was hermione there?
I enjoyed that scene, and hermiones attitude to ron that morning was great, a good scene overall. I didn't notice the music so much

Hehe, okay, fine, I'll join.

The Riddle House
When I saw the WB logo, I was about to fall off my seat. It was the moment I've been waiting for. I'm glad that they went with the same effect of showing the logo as they did in PoA, a 3D logo in the dark.

Didn't like the snake at all. Looked too fake.

The music was quite good, IMO. It was very haunting and sounded great. When Frank Bryce was in the Riddles' mansion with his latern in the dark, it was a scary scene. Even thought I read the book, I had to close my eyes a bit b/c you never know what the director might've done..like inserting a out-of-nowhere eye-popping stuff, lol. I thought it was well-done.

Frank eavesdropping on Voldemort's conversation with Crouch Jr and Wormtail wasn't that intense as I thought, but I didn't mind. Again, I didn't like the snake. When Wormtail opened the door and stared at Frank, I thought he looked too confident. You know, with the big eyes and all. I imagined him to be nervous, shy and all. And the "Avada"..it was amazingly awesome! Loved it!

Harry wakes up at the Burrow, they meet the Diggorys, then take the Portkey
When Harry woke up in Ron's room, I thought the no-music was great. After the music in "Avada", it ended right when he woke up..so, yeah..

The humour b/w Ron and Hermione was great, too.

I thought that Burrow looked a bit too fake, but I guess it was only me. I agree with Andrew. The camera going through the long grass was artistic and the scenery was awesome. Loved it. The Portkey..wow, I loved it. Also loved it when Arthur yelled at Harry to grab the shoe. I was like.."Harry, what the hell are you doing?!? Grab the shoe!", lol.

I thought the whole Portkey scene was nicely done. The special effects were great. I absolutely loved it.

Btw, I also agree how Arthur, Amos and Cedric walking in the air was funny. Well..to be frank, I didn't think it was funny. I thought it was kinda corny and that they should've fell down onto the ground like the rest did. No offense.

The campsite, the Qwidditch World Cup match and celebration in the tent : The campsite was really good. Harry's line "I love magic" - no comment. The scene in the stadium was spectacular with dazzling special effects. Of course I would have like to see the match, but I understand that it had to be cut. Better cut a Quidditch match than a more important scene. I liked the celebration in the tent after the match because it showed the boys just being boys.

sorry, my computers been down ive been dealing with a pile of homework *gulps*.

anyway, scenes.

riddle house

i thought this scene was an excellent beginning. the music that i thought would be horrible tied in nicely. when i saw the logo i grinned and sat up in my seat. the one problem i had with this scene was Nagini. im sorry, but that wasnt how i pictured her. i was fine with the parseltongue and the showing of crouch jr.

burrow, portkey

i found this scene a bit odd. it had a nice transition and i found the thing between ron and hermione funny. the portkey, on the otherhand, wasnt how i imagined. i found it excellent how they did it but it still wasnt what i thought it would be. cedric popping out of a tree was funny and weird and same with cedric, mr.weasly and mr.diggory walking landing on the ground perfectly.

The campsite, the Qwidditch World Cup match and celebration in the tent : i was angry with Qwidditch being cut but it had to be done. the first sight of the tent i thought that it was just like i had pictured it to be. at harry's comment i must've given a weak smile or something. i agree with Roonil about the celebration. it was excellent because it showed boys being boys. it just sucked that there was no Qwidditch!!

The campsite, the Quidditch World Cup match and celebration in the tent :
I liked how the campsite looked. It was better than I thought; tents small on the outside and big on the inside, teenagers flying on their brooms above the campsite. Harry's comment left me a smile on my face, lol. It was amusing, IMO.

When the Weasleys were on their way to their places, Lucius was there with Draco. I liked his first appearance in the movie. "Enjoy it while you can"..lol, loved it how Jason Isaacs delivered that line.

The World Cup..I like how the stadium was set out. It was well-done. It looked real. I loved how they did the fireworks and the dancing Leprechaun, lol. Both of the Quidditch teams gave a good introduction. The music was quite good, too...dramatic. And I was and still am pissed how they didn't show the match. But yeah, it had to be done. Damnit!

The celebration..I liked it how Newell showed that the boys were being themselves. It showed how they were growing up and all. Funny scene, I thought.

IMSDB now has the movie script for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It can be helpful in the analysis, in case someone doesn't remember a certain scene or a piece of dialogue.

What can I say about the quidditch scene?

It was good from the beginning, when theres an event like this theres bound to be lots of people something which wasn't obvious in the book but this was good, it was a good scene, the music was good, it was a shame they cut the quidditch but still it was good, overall I liked this scene, apart from the lack of quidditch i dont have anything else negative to say about it.

Hmmm... I wouldn't use it as a reference for dialouge. I'm not even finished with the first scene and I already spot at least 2 errors.

Next scene...

The campsite attack : It was a good scene, but I think it could have been better. First, it was too short. The destruction was shown for less than a minute. And then, it didn't make sense that the campsite was all deserted after Harry woke up because you wonder where the crowds have gone and how come the Weasleys and the Ministry haven't seen Crouch Jr. conjuring the Mark since they were close by and the field was all deserted. I was also disappointed that they cut Arthur and Bill's piece of exposition in the tent about Voldemort's followers and the Dark Mark. On the positive side, I liked the Death Eaters costumes and the effects were great. I enjoyed the scene, but the book's version was better in my opinion.

The campsite attack : I thought it was a bit short. It could've been a little bit longer, but yeah, it had to be done. I didn't like the costumes that the Death Eaters wore. I liked the masks, but the hats were a bit too weird.

The fires and destroyings were so-so. Not a masterpiece and not too bad. And then Harry tripped over..cut to where Crouch Jr. was walking onto an empty field with no people. I thought it went all too fast.

The Dark Mark was the only thing I found exciting and well-done. I absolutely loved it..the greeny Dark Mark in the night sky and the intense music behind it. Loved it. I must admit, I was a little spooked by the music. Props to Doyle.

When Ron and Hermione came to get Harry, I thought.. "what the hell..? One minute, the field was so empty and then they came out of nowhere." But I'm not complaining. Then the Ministry was there and fired red sparks at the trio. Wow, didn't see that coming. I liked the sparks. It was pretty cool. Although..I thought they made Crouch Sr. pretty lame in that scene. I guess it was the Hitler-look.

Overall, it was okay. I liked few parts in it. Could've been longer.

Time to move on, I think ..

The Hogwarts Express : I really liked this scene and I don't have anything negative to say about it. It's good that they spent some time in the train and it wasn't as rushed as everything was before. This is actually where things begin to calm down a bit. It's also good for continuity that they mentioned the Dark Mark and the World Cup events. Hedwig flying off was a beautiful shot.

The Hogwarts Express :
We were in the World Cup scene in the minute and then moved to the train in the next. I thought it went by all too fast. But nothing major.

Harry's first "love" sight with Cho was okay, I guess. I might've sniggered a bit, lol. Poor guy. I didn't really like how Cho gave that look to Harry. You know..the smile and all. I thought it was lame and amusing at the same time, lol.

At the time when Hermione mentioned Sirius, I got excited. I thought how the camera zoomed in on Harry's hand, writing Sirius' name on the letter was pretty good. And the shot of Hedwig flying was magnificent.

Overall, it was okay. Nothing big.
