brentage5000 said: So I let you guys know last night that I think this is happening during the 1973-74 school year. That means the following events are happening around us (and frankly, I would think they can easily be worked into or around the script)
--Sirius Black, Lily Evans, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, James Potter, Severus Snape begin their third year at Hogwarts.
--Sirius, James, and Peter are working on learning to become Animagi
--Sirius Black and James Potter first visit Hogsmeade.
--Sirius Black and James Potter gain a reputation as practical jokers and troublemakers, although everyone likes them.
Oh, I planned to do that since the beginning.
...and the other book reference in that first post of yours would be your character's address. I spotted that one straight away...

...and the plot:
Storyline (refined)
The year will be around 1972-1974. Dumbledore has been Headmaster for a couple years. Lily, James, Sirius, Severus, etc are well off on thier start at Hogwarts. Slughorn is still Potions master and head of Slytherin, Hagrid is simply a Gamekeeper, and Trelawny has many years before she steps foot near Hogwarts or making prophecies. There have been rumors and reports of a wizard terribly powerful in the Dark Arts who calls himself Lord Voldemort and has followers who have deemed themselves the Death Eaters. However, the Ministry has gone to great lengths to keep the stories hushed to prevent panic and embarrassment. A new class of first years arrives at Hogwarts--unknowingly containing the remaining three heirs of the original founders of Hogwarts. All is well and the year is off to a bright start until the end of November when Tom Riddle suddenly appears to speak with Dumbledore.
To inquire about being a teacher...
Weeks after Tom's visit, odd things start happening around the school and grounds. Students disappear from their beds but when they wake in the morning, they remember nothing of the night before. Creatures in the forest begin to a grow restless and aggitated. A group of endeavoring students that attempt to see who's snatching their classmates are attacked by a band of Red Caps that mysteriously appear on the grounds. Then, one grave evening, three students disappear and aren't returned for nearly a fortnight. Even though their disappearance is extended and the teachers are vigilant, the students are retruned to sleeping in their beds right under the Headmaster's nose. Panic grips the wizard world when it is rumored that a ritual called "Salazar's Sacrament" (which requires the blood and presence of each of the Hogwarts' heirs) has been performed. Their suspicions are confirmed when the Ministry is attacked and dark wizard-folk begin openly killing and performing magic on Muggles. As the days begin to grow dark, some even whisper that Voldemort lurks in the shadows and they fear to speak his name. Only the Headmaster and a loyal few of his teachers believe there is hope. A hope that rests on three young students who must band together and enlist their friends in order to save the school and the world.

Now, if you would lilke to join our game, please let us know. Currently, requests to be in Gryffindor or Ravenclaw will be denied. However, there's plenty of room in Hufflepuff and Slytherin.
If you would like to portray a teacher then you will need to contact me. We want this run smoothly with the actually HP timeline. So, if you have your heart set on being, say, the Potions master then you will have to portray good ol' Slughorn. Otherwise, if you're feeling creative, you can dig through the HP Lexicon and come up with a subject of your own liking--like Rostron has done with Forbes.
That being said, here are links to:

Okay, so after reading a few of the most recent posts I want to say: GREAT JOB, but...
1. Try not to be too rushed, you're going to completely blow right by opportunities to further flesh out your character and interact with others.
2. Try not to be overly vague, others are not going to know how to respond to your posts if they have no clue what you're talking about. However, its good to have a little ambiguity at times, builds suspense...
3. It's fun to hit on plot points, but be discrete about it, especially early on. We're going to bore people if we give away our suspense. (*Note: James, this why your post was editted.)
...so yeah, this wasn't aimed at every single post. I'm just saying, in general, these are a few things to keep in mind.
It's Bruce!

Oh, and for the wands, something I discovered -- the reasoning for the cores. Just go here for info on what "your" core would be, and remember -- try to stick with the first three. If I weare a jet pilot, every time I was halfway through the flight, I'd do a nose-dive

It's working fine for me. And thanks for the website, Brent. It's really helpful. I just realized that I made a mistake about what's in my wand. *goes to edit his bio*
Okay, my wand is now yew and runespoor fang, lol. I thought it was maple and unicorn tail, but that's a mix-up. Yew is the wood in Voldemort's wand and runespoor fang is good for dealing with Dark magic, knowing that the wand belonged to an Auror, lol. Now... it sounds much more fearsome, lol.
Interesting...out of curiosity, did you use the celtic system for your wand that Jo used for the trios wands? Cause that's what I did. Oh, and for the Runespoor...I think that was meant to mean works great when using Dark Magic, not works great aginst dark magic...so I hope you're in Slytherin if that was your intent. And finally, here's the list of celtic woods -- just find your birthday and use the corresponding wood (but only if you wanna...whatever):
December 24 - January 20 = Birch
January 21 - February 17 = Rowan
February 18 - March 17 = Ash
March 18 - April 14 = Alder
April 15 - May 12 = Willow
May 13 - June 9 = Hawthorn
June 10 - July 7 = Oak
July 8 - August 4 = Holly
August 5 - September 1 = Hazel
September 2 - September 29 = Vine
September 30 - October 27 = Ivy
October 28 - November 24 = Reed
November 25 - December 23 = Elder If I weare a jet pilot, every time I was halfway through the flight, I'd do a nose-dive

Yeah, I thought being in Slytherin, my character needs a wand that relates to the Dark magic and... *looks at the list* There's no yew in it. So, that wood is restricted? Please tell me, so I can change it on my character's biography to another wood. :/
Edit-- Found this at JKR's site:
"JKR chose the woods for Harry and Voldemort's wands with great care. The holly used for Harry's wand was thought to be able to "repel evil," while the yew in Voldemort's wand is associated with longevity, death and resurrection. Yew also has poisonous sap. JKR also discovered that she had given Harry the correct wood for his wand by coincidence, according to the properties assigned to different trees by Celts."
Hmmm... so yew is restricted? *scratches head* The Howling X-Stud

Okay, I'm finishing this now -- YOU CAN USE WHATEVER COMBINATION YOU WANT FOR YOUR WAND; I WAS JUST POINTING OUT THE CELTIC THING AS A MEANS OF INTEREST WHEN ASKING JAMES ABOUT HIS WAND. ALSO, JUST BECAUSE IT'S NOT ACCORDING TO THE CELTIC SYSTEM DOES NOT MAKE IT WRONG, AND THERE ARE LIKELY OTHER WAND SELLERS BESIDES OLLIVANDER IF YOU WANT A DIFFERENT CORE!!! OH, AND ONE OTHER THING VANS -- I THINK IT QUITE LIKELY THAT OLLIVANDER NOT STICK TO JUST TWELVE WOODS, SO IF THE BOY WANTS YEW, LET HIM HAVE YEW!!!!
Geez... If I weare a jet pilot, every time I was halfway through the flight, I'd do a nose-dive
