Wednesday 6th July 2005: Movie News: Silver Surfer:
Item Posted by: Gary Gray:
Yesterday was the day of wild casting rumours, so I guess today is wild director rumours, with the news that quirky director David O. Russell is being sought by Avi Arad to helm the Marvel comic book adap. Silver Surfer. No confirmation on this yet.
Monday 7th April 2003: Silver Surfer Update:
Vin Diesel has expressed his desire to portray comic book character the
Silver Surfer in a movie. "The Surfer is an intergalactic superhero," who is
"one step further than all these regional superheroes," Diesel said.
Silver Surfer is one of the classic Marvel characters created by Stan Lee back in the 60's alongside Fantastic Four and many others. A movie of the Silver Surfer has been rumoured for many a year. So far the only Marvel property to be made into a worthwhile succesful adaptation has been X Men, with hopefully Spiderman next year being both commericaly and artistically successful as well. If it is then it will surely help drum up interest into getting some of the other Marvel properties out of development hell and onto the screen.
First mention I know of a Silver Surfer movie was back in 1997 when Stan Lee announced that a Silver Surfer movie was in development. A script was apparently prepared with Galactus being the foil to Silver Surfer .Geoffrey Wright was rumoured to be up for the directing chair and Richard Jeffries having written the script. The project was apparently ensconsed at 20th Century Fox with Neue Constantin Films co-producing.
Silver Surfer himself was thought to be fully CGI and this is what was thought to have stalled things back in 1997 due to the high cost of making a CGI character for the entire length of the movie.
This wasn't the end though as word later on came in that John Rice and Rudy Gaines had had a go at a script for a Silver Surfer movie. But around this time Marvel had their money problems and they pulled back from movie projects to concentrate on getting out of bankruptcy.
This still didn't kill off the project with word that Mike Finch was writing a script for Silver Surfer which was still based at 20th Century Fox. Fox alos around this time renewed their rights for Silver Surfer, which was a good sign that they were keen on getting it made. Bernd Eichinger was also confirmed as a producer on Silver Surfer at that time.
Yet another scriptwriter came on board, a big hitter this time in the name of Andrew Kevin Walker, who wrote the extremely dark script for Se7en.
And that is as far as things have gotten , there has been some word of what Walker has done with the script which comes from an Erik Fleming who made a Silver Surfer short movie on Atom Films, he didn't rate the first attempts at the script "These scripts were like, he comes to earth, he loses his silver skin, and he's walking around human the whole movie, and in the end he gets his skin back and flies away" Sounds like a budgetary reason doesn't it? But he was more positive about Walkers script "He might crack it because he's a great writer. I think his deal was that he was going to set it all in space, his deal is to completely can Earth and to make it like a Star Wars kind of movie where the whole thing is set all in outer space, in the future."
