November 22, 2005 — In recognition of its tremendous popularity around the world, The Polar Express: An IMAX 3D Experience will be re-released by Warner Bros. Pictures beginning Wednesday, November 23rd for an exclusive IMAX-only encore engagement. As the first full- length feature film ever converted into IMAX(R) 3D, the record-breaking film opened last season to critical acclaim and unprecedented box-office success, cementing its place as highest-grossing IMAX digitally re-mastered film to date, generating $45 million on just 84 IMAX screens.
The holiday film will be sharing its screen-time with the blockbuster hit Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: The IMAX Experience at many IMAX theatres, and will play on a total of 83 screens. "When I saw the tests for The Polar Express in IMAX 3D, I was excited that audiences would be able to experience the movie this way," said director Robert Zemeckis. "The 3D adds incredible depth and allows the viewers to experience the visual splendor and amazing adventure of this classic story in a way which should create a really memorable experience, not only this holiday season but for years to come." IMAX 3D is the world's premiere 3D movie experience. As the innovator and leader in 3D entertainment for more than 20 years, IMAX is the only large- screen experience that completely immerses the audience into the 3D world, allowing objects to maintain lifelike size and be brought in front of the screen -- right into the audience's faces.
Last holiday season, from New York to London to Mexico City to Malaysia, The Polar Express: An IMAX 3D Experience became a 'must see' movie around the world. In its second run, IMAX Theatres have already recorded strong advanced ticket sales throughout North America -- and have posted strong early results in select cities in the United Kingdom, Spain and Mexico, where the film has already debuted. "Audiences responded with great enthusiasm to this movie when it opened in IMAX 3D last year," said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. "We're very pleased to kick off the holiday season again this year with The Polar Express: An IMAX 3D Experience, and hope that it continues to conjure up magic for families everywhere." IMAX 3D DMR is a process by which a conventional 2D, computer-generated film is converted into 3D and then digitally re-mastered into IMAX's larger than life format using IMAX DMR(R) technology. The proprietary IMAX DMR process creates a film format for The Polar Express: An IMAX 3D Experience which is 10 times larger than its original.
For audiences wearing special IMAX 3D glasses, the film will appear to have depth both beyond and in front of the screen. The sheer size, combined with the IMAX 3D projection technology, will provide moviegoers with an immersive, extraordinary, cinematic experience as they grasp at the falling snowflakes and duck as the train screeches to a halt in their lap. The Academy Award(R)-winning team of Tom Hanks and director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Cast Away) reunited for this inspiring holiday adventure based on the classic Caldecott Medal-winning children's book by Chris Van Allsburg. When a doubting young boy takes an extraordinary train ride to the North Pole, he embarks on a journey of self-discovery that shows him that the wonder of life never fades for those who believe.
