| How excited (or not) I am to see this movie... |
|
First the good stuff...
As anti heroes go, Spawn would have to be one of my favourites. I'm a big fan of the movie & the original, beautifully coloured comics, not to mention the ground breaking (for the time) soundtrack. I'm still looking forward to seeing the animated series.
I thought the casting for the movie was quite good, especially the Violator & also Spawn himself put in some great performances, if let down a little by the mangled script.
I've read some of the other reviews on this site bagging the CG, & even tho it dates the film (as i recall, a lot of the budget went into that) I feel that it was adequate enough to tell the story.
What spoiled the film for me was the unnecessary narrative at the beginning that gives away the whole story before the movie even started. I have a feeling that this was the influence of Time Warner who felt they needed to explain things to the dumber members of the audience rather than being it Todds idea.
In my opinion, if you're going to make a movie based on a successful comic, you should assume that it will be those fans who are the target audience. If they can read, they can figure out the plot as it evolves for themselves! It's not as if it's hard to follow anyway.
SO, i'm very excited to hear there is a Spawn 2 in the works! I thought that not enought attention was put into the fact that his awesome powers are limited & in the comics, i loved how he almost used them all up trying to restore his body, something that was not even touched on in the first movie. I'm guessing that it's taken so long to get to the sequel because Todd wanted to have more creative control & make the movie how he feels it should be made, without having to "cave in" to the Hollywood execs.
Also, there was no mention of the "Archangels" that showed "Heavens" champion, who turned out to be just as evil as any other character in the story!
I saw the comment on this site suggesting Hellboy v's Spawn & that got me thinking... Maybe a new series of crossover comics/movies/anime` would be WAY COOL!
I don't suppose Todd will ever read this, but just in case, i'd like to mention that i always thought the Batman/Spawn crossover from the comic book days would make an EXCELLENT movie!
Another idea i had was Spawn v's Ghostrider, since it touches on the same topic... A nice twist could be that there is more than one evil force fighting for control of earths souls, something that was suggested in the comics, but i never saw it realised. That could be my lack of knowledge tho... It got hard to find those comics here in Oz after a while, i'd love to see a reprint.
Happy 10th aniversary to the Spawn movie! I gotta find me that directors cut!
