May 24, 2001 — Todd McFarlane had a lot to say about Spawn 2 to IGN Film Force in an interview about his upcoming and current projects:
IGNFF: But talking about movies, Spawn 2 finally looks like it’s going to get made.
MCFARLANE: Well, ummm... we’re in Hollywood, so “get made” is a very ambiguous word. The rights came back to me from New Line, and we took it over to Columbia. They were pretty gracious because they bought it, without a pitch or screenplay. They just bought it. They went, “Whhhew. It’s up. We’ll take it.” I went, “You want to hear the story?” And they said, “You can come back to us.” So actually, next week I’ve got to go in and give them the idea, because they bought the franchise, if you will. Really the biggest thing that I was talking to them about was I can get the budget. I can get the budget down, so that it becomes a no-brainer, which I think was one of the reasons why I think they picked it up, not needing to have a lot of details, because I’ll go I’ll bring them a script I believe they can make for about 25 million bucks, minus end talent – I’ll leave that up to them guys. I’ll keep this reasonable so that way the sequel will be about 15 or 20 million dollars cheaper than the first one. I want to re-invent it from being an action/special effects/fantasy movie to being an R-rated thriller/suspense, with a little bit of horror mixed in, and make it a real movie where... I want to re-invent Spawn into what it always was for me.
