Alright, so i went and watched this movie three times now, and read Ironmans info in Wiki and to me it felt that they some-what missed a major element in Starks life: his ALCOHOLISM.

We see him drinking in the scene at the casino, and gets a drink at his party with Pepper. But they never once showed him abuse or over-indulge himself with alcohol.

Maybe in IM2, they could emphasize this alittle more, but in noway did this ruin the movie experience for me.

They had enough hints throughout the film showing he had alcohol issues. Pretty much every scene he's in, excluding him in the lab, have him with a drink in his hand.

Jon Faverau stated early on that he wants to address Tony's alcoholism in the films, but felt that there was too much story to tell in the first to fully cover it. But he left us a major hint it was going to happen, you just have to catch it. Really you'll notice that so many times when you see him he's drinking what's cleary alchohol; in the jeep before the attack in the middle east, while setting the color scheme for the Mark 3 etc, on the private jet with Rhodie, after the missile demonstration. Hell in the jeep scene in the beginning the first shot inside the jeep is a close up of his glass of what looked like whiskey or something along those lines. And then the fact that he brought a high tech cooler with him to the demonstration.

I believe Iron Man hit and missed a chance to show Starks alcohol problem.

Hit: Shows him drinking a good amount

Missed: They could have had him stop drinking after he escapes and does his realizing what he is meant for thing. But something they did do was show him drinking some sort of healthy vitamin drink right before he goes to the party. But then they ruin it by having him order a drink at the party.

This can all go under poor character development

I did notice those, but isnt he supposed to abuse it? All i seen was just him havng a drink. Like in alot of those seens, yes alcohol is present, BUT they barely show him drinking it. The first couple times i didnt notice it, but i guess one more time wouldnt hurt to take a closer look in this.

I didn't think it was necessary for the film. I understand how important it is in the comic story line, but I think the film did a good enough job showing him to be a drunken, woman-izing, selfish billionaire.

However, I would not complain if they emphasized his problem in sequels.

Well he didn't abuse alchohal right off the bat, you know. That was years into the character's comic book storylines. He's always drank, yes, but he didn't really start to hit the drinks hard until later. They're probably just trying to capture that here, as well.

Psycho1, I think the answer to your question is an obvious no, but really that's ok because it just gives them someplace to go with future films.

Dude, are you kidding?

With the exception of him being held hostage and eating a cheeseburger in front of the press, I can barely remember a scene when he was out of his armor that he DIDN'T have a drink in his hand.

Drinking is an effort to try and fill a void....i dont remember much alchohol after he becomes accustomed to being Iron Man.

Well, he DID seem to get drunk on the plane ride over to the middle east or whatever. I mean, it wasn't like he was COMPLETELY a wreck, but it was definitely showing that he doesn't steer clear of the stuff, or that he only ever has one glass.

Also, I think everyone understands that with that kind of life style, drinking and such often follows.
