E.T. Gets a New Poster

SUBMITTED BY SpySoldier

October 17, 2001 — IGN FilmForce has your first look at the 20th anniversary poster for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

"I recall seeing the poster for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial while waiting to see Alien (again). At the time, I was more interested in John Alvin's Blade Runner poster – in my opinion, one of the best ever created for a film – which was displayed nearby with Tron and The Thing. However, Alvin's classic E.T. poster was, and is, these twenty years later, simple, mysterious, and intriguing.

As you know, the "fingers" poster (style B) is a play on Michaelangelo's Creation of Adam, and on that account, it deliberately communicates the same notion/concept. (My mother's an art historian, so I'm referring to her for this.) The image's intrigue is in the touch; it's that the fingers almost touch, or, that the touch is unseen; obscured by the light. This (supposed) gap brings about the effect of vital tension, in which the viewer feels what the image presents as imminent – a spark, enlightenment, healing energy.

Analysis aside, we're pleased to bring you this first look (below) at the poster for E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial: The 20th Anniversary Edition. The poster combines the elements of the style B and style C poster (flying bicycle)."
