Will E.T. 20th anniversary beat Titanic's record?

Current domestic B.O. record

1.Titanic $601
2.Star Wars $460
3.The Phantom Menace $430
4.E.T. $400

All E.T. needs is over $200+ million dollars to beat Titanic. It is possible. E.T. was No.1 of all-time b.o. champ 15 years ago. Until SW:20th anniv. release reclaimed it's title. Then Titanic ruled the box office and it stayed that way for 5 years.

George Lucas said "nothing can beat Titanic. It's one of those things." Spielberg had a secret weapon all along to reclaim his once 15-year title reign. I hope the E.T. 20th could get a chance.

What do you think?

ET will bring in 200 million on opening day, or maybe weekend. Either way, it is going to blow HP and LOTR out of the water in so many ways. It may even double Titanics earnings.

It won't blow HP and LOTR. It is being rereleased. I wish it would, but the chances of making more now than LOTR and HP? 1-200!

The other week I read that Harry Potter is now the second highest grossing film of all time - although this is worldwide figures I think, not just the States. As for E.T - I don't care whether it beats Titanic or not, they're both crap films.

I don't see it happening either. Maybe topping Star Wars again but not Titanic.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. . .

I was reading about this same topic in Premiere...

They said, in fact, that with inflation of ticket sales, that if E.T.'s gross would have been brought in 1997, that it would have topped Titanic's.

But anyway, I think it'll do very very well. Heck, it's one of the movies a lot of people cant wait to see this year, so yup- E.T. will phone home nicely.

I'm sorry, I just can't stand E.T. Then again, I don't like many Spielberg films (Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park aside).

You have got to be shitting me. If you want to see E.T. so bad, go rent the ****in video!!! This pisses me off!! They spend all of thsi time bringing back a 20 year old film to the theater and spend all of this money to advertise it, and even do an ABC special on it.

Don't get me wrong, I love E.T. and I think it is a great film. However, I think fans should boycott the film, and watch it bomb to prove a point. Spend time delivering new solid flicks, instead of re releasing old ones.

From what I can see, all that has changed is the soundtrack sounds better, E.T. is digitally enhanced, and there is a scene in the bathroom where E.T. pops his head out of the tub.

Instead of putting it out in theaters, why wouldn't they just bring it to DVD.

Everybody should boycott E.T.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most films are best seen on a big screen. E.T. is one of those films. I often wish that many films would be re-released periodically to give people a chance to see them as they were originally meant to be seen.

You have wrong info. Titanic grossed almost 2 billion dollars. Harry Potter made just over half of that. The record is no where in reach.

I never said it was. I said Harry Potter is now the SECOND highest grossing film of all time internationally, BEHIND Titanic! Is it really that difficult to understand?

Maybe TPM's record, but no others. All the theaters except one are showing it on only one screen

I think it will! I sure hope so! I saw it tonight and people applauded wildly at the end. My 7 year old son (who had never seen it before) said, "Mom, that is the best movie I've ever seen, better than Star Wars even." What bigger complement can you give a movie than that? I still teared up watching it after all these years!

The one movie I'd love to see on the big screen: 2001 A Space Odysee, after finally seeing Star Wars a few years ago, that leaves only that movie

I read this over at TheForce.net today:

"E.T.'s" lifetime total has now reached $414.9 million, and it's all but certain to surpass "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace's" $431.1 million to become the third-highest grossing movie of all time (unadjusted). It also crossed the $800 million mark adjusted for inflation. However, it will likely stay at No. 4 on the adjusted all time list as No. 3 "The Sound of Music's" $850 million should prove insurmountable given the quick burn-off rate of re-issues these days.
