February 25, 2002 — According to Movieheadlines.net the ending of The Time Machine will be different from the book:
[Production Designer Oliver Scholl] actually designed an ending sequence where, like in the original book, the time traveler sees the ultimate future where the sun has become a red giant. That was eliminated from the film in favor of a different surprise ending, which the filmmakers would not reveal, but Scholl explained why the red giant ending.
"I think the main point was it's actually a pretty depressing situation. He's trying to fight for what's going on with the Eloi just to find out it doesn't matter because it's going to end and the Earth will burn up? It doesn't support the story at this point. As much as I love it as a very iconic shot for a science fiction movie, we have something else there."
Wells added, "There is a far future but it's not the sun burning out."
