Hi there. I just saw The Time Machine with my girlfriend, and I don't know whether I like it or hate it. The first 45 minutes were entertaining, but right when the main character arrives in the 800,000's, the movie bored me to death. Anyways, my question is,
Jeremy Irons said something about Alexander's time machine and that his time machine made Jeremy Irons into the creature that he is
(or at least I think he said that, my gf was talking to me at the same time) so can someone please explain that scene? Thank you.

i have no idea what Irons meant. I was too bored to pay attention.
But yes, the first 40 minutes was pretty good.
Sorry, this doesnt help

I just saw Time Machine too and also had similar questions...so I may not be able to answer it. But I believe it has something to do with the fact that
Alexander built the time machine and went back at least once. If you'll remember, his gf was shot by the mugger the first time, then Alexander went back with his machine and the she was killed by the horse & buggy. It was from there that he went onto the future, to find out why he cannot change the past. I still can't figure out why the way she died and Alexander's time machine exactly has a bearing on the fact that the Morlocks are in existence...unless it's an arbitrary matter of how that slight change of a fork in the road will affect something so huge later on.
Any other thoughts? Am I on the right track?

To Harlee-The Uber-Morlock explained it this way:
SPOILERS!!!
Alex built the Time Machine only because he wanted to save Emma. If Emma hadn't died he wouldn't have built the Time Machine, therefore what he did depended on Emma dying so he can't reverse that. Kinda deep and interesting!
I didn't find the movie boring, I felt I got my money's worth.

it sounds about right Guy4me. But i dont think i got my moneys worth. And i paid Student Discount 5.75.
But i will argue that the first 40 minutes was pretty good. I liked the mood and settings. But it was nothing but downhill from there.

What was wrong with the last hour? Sure, the action parts were kinda lame, but other that that I thought it was pretty interesting

I still don't get it (I apologize for being a moron! ). O.K. then,
so one of the times he went back to save Emma (I believe he tried saving her a thousand times), he created the Morlocks of the future??
Thanks for the replies!

I still don't get it 100% either...Why does the fact that
Alexander even built the machine in the first place hinge on the fact that the Morlocks exist? How is the death of Emma relevant to that (besides the fact that her death prompted Alexander to build the time machine in the first place)?
I still don't quite get the connection between the two things. I really liked the film--I just want to understand one part of it.

Harlie I don't think the two things are related at all.
Warning-spoiler ahead!!!
The uber-morlock was saying he was the result of scientists like the time traveler trying to change the course of evolution, and screwing up mankind in general. I think that's right. But the reason he couldn't bring Emma back is because if she hadn't died then the time machine would never have been built by HIM. That's not to say other scientists didn't tinker with the idea of time travel and succeeded too.

He is the reason the Morlocks exist, because he was so absest of changing the past. You can not change the past, if had gone back a thousand times she still would die. He was no better than those who breed the Morlocks.
I was entertained in the movie, did not find it boring. Of it slowed down it, i was fine with that.

I saw it last nite too and what I believe Irons character was stating was that Pearce's character had set this in motion back in his original time and was therefore to blame for the present circumstances.

"I saw it as a way of "creating" his own time flow of things every time her traveled forward. "

Hmm interesting. But how would that effect the entire world's time flow? Confusing.

To Harlie
You're welcome!

Blipvert -
This sounds like something from quantum theory -- where all potentials exist at once until an outside presence witnesses the thing, forcing it into one state of existence. So the main characters running through time and witnessing what he did locked things in stone

Yes, you're right. By witnessing he guarantees it will come into existence.

Just to clear it all up, the Uber Morlock is the result of Alexander's meddling with time, that whole thing with the Eloi ad Morlocks would have happened anyway. And One More Thing:

Hallo,
I'm new to the board but I think I can explain this. Jurrassic Park fans might remember this story but it is the same concept as the fact/idea that a butterfly in south africa flaps it's wings and in California you get rain instead of sunshine. The line Mr. Uber-Morlock said was to add the more moral/philospohical twist that all of our actions, no matter how insignificant or dramatic, have a profound effect not only on the world around us, but on the world to come. It isnt meant so much to be taken literally as it is meant ot make us think.
Hope that helps resolve any remaining confusion.

Yes, yes YES! I'm glad someone sees it the way I saw it! I didn't think it was meant to be taken literaly at all. I thought that he meant that he was created through people's lack of foresight and self-absorbsion, just the way that Guy's quest was self-absorbed and selfish. That's how I saw it
