| A First Look at Jon Favreau's Zathura |

Actor/director Jon Favreau (Swingers, Elf) brought an exclusive look at a scene from his upcoming family film Zathura to the San Diego Comic-Con this week. Favreau told attendees that after the success of Elf, he started to receive a lot of family-oriented scripts and after receiving the David Koepp adaptation of the Chris Van Allsburg children's book "Zathura," he saw a lot of potential in the kid-friendly sci-fi romp. It is the tale of a pair of young brothers, staying with their recently divorced dad and learning how to get along with one another. When the youngest boy, Danny (Johan Bobo) finds an old, tin board game called 'Zathura' in the basement, the boys sit down to play, which results in the house being shot out into space. The only way to get back home is to keep playing the game and surviving the obstacles the game throws at them.
"We wanted to make it look like the old sci-fi movies I grew up watching," said Favreau regarding the use of many more models and physical attributes in the film versus trendy CGI effects. "Kinda like the old Star Wars versus the new Star Wars."
The scene shown to attendees found the boys in the house now in outer space and playing the game to try to get back home. Walter (Josh Hutcherson) takes a turn and draws a card that reads, "Your robot is defective." About that time, a three-inch tall robot waddles into the room. As the boys argue about the use/purpose of the mechanical man, it begins to grow in the background, turning into a 10-foot tall steel behemoth that targets young Walter while repeating, "Alien lifeform must destroy." The robot chases Walter around the house, as Danny attempts to take a turn at the game with hopes their situation will improve.
The robot and a race of lizard-like aliens called Zorgons that appear later in the film were the creation of legendary creature designer Stan Winston.
If the premise of Zathura sounds familiar, it should. The last Van Allsburg book to by adapted for the big screen was "Jumanji" a story with a similar premise. Favreau said he and the studio struggled to find a compromise between confusing audiences into thinking the new film is a sequel to Jumanji and being labeled a rip-off of the 1995 movie. In the end, the marketing team opted to tag "From the world of Jumanji" to much of the film's promotion materials

"Why are people looking for escape in movies?....Because it's....a form of recapturing not a'childish' impulse, but a way of looking at the world as if it were fresh and interesting." - Tim Burton
"An actor should never be larger than the film he's in." - Christian Bale
