September 29, 2003 — A man who posted a copy of the movie Hulk online two weeks before its theatrical release has been sentenced for his crime.
Mr. Gonzalez, 24, pleaded guilty in June in Federal District Court in Manhattan to one count of copyright infringement, a felony for which he could have received a year in prison.
The tape that Mr. Gonzalez uploaded into an Internet chat room in early June was intended for use at an advertising agency. It was unfinished, and the agency was not allowed to make or distribute copies, according to a court document.
But an agency employee lent the tape to a friend, who lent it to Mr. Gonzalez. After he put it on the Internet in advance of the movie's June 20 opening, it became available for further unauthorized copying, "to the economic detriment of Universal," the court papers say.
