Anyone who has spent the last week hibernating may not notice that much of a difference from last week as the Top 3 movies at the box office successfully held four new movies at bay.
Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore, stayed on top for a second weekend in a row, earning an estimated $28.3 million, about half of its opening weekend take.
New Line's R-rated comedy Wedding Crashers, starring Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, held up far better than any other major release this summer, earning an estimated $26.2, an unprecedented 67% of its opening weekend take without expanding into any more theatres. Averaging $8,957 per theatre, it was also the top earner of the weekend across the board in most theatres. Its already grossed twice its $40 million budget in a mere ten days. (Can you say sequel? I knew you could.)
20th Century Fox comic book adaptation Fantastic Four stayed in third place with an estimated $12.3 million bringing its total gross to $122.6 million.

A strong Japanese bow kept "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" in the No. 1 spot at the international boxoffice this weekend. Estimated overall takings were $11.3 million from about 4,100 prints in 49 countries; the cumulative total now stands at $155.7 million. The Japanese responded strongly to Tim Burton's fantasy, delivering about $4.3 million from 338 prints for the top spot ahead of local title holdovers "Nana" and "Suspect: Muroi Shinhi." The opening was more than double "Shark Tale," 66% up on "Shrek 2," 55% better than "Madagascar" and 94% of "The Incredibles." In New Zealand, "Charlie" dominated the market with excellent earnings of $875,000 from 80 prints, commanding more than 70% of the top-five market share. Excluding sneaks, this was 138% better than "Fantastic Four," 64% up on "The Incredibles," 35% better than "Madagascar" and 21% up on "Finding Nemo."
