JUST GOT HOME!!!
Ok, first of all, it was absolutely gorgeous. Tim Burton is a genius. I think it's sad that Roald Dahl died before he could see how it turned out. I bet he'd have loved it.
The casting was genius. I honestly can't think of anyone I'd have changed, which is really rare for me. Deep Roy was amazing, as were all the children, but especially Freddie Highmore. I'd never seen anything else he's done, but I was very very impressed.
Johnny Depp... could have afforded to take himself a little more seriously... but the little backstory was interesting and explained a lot... and Christopher Lee is so amazing, I can't complain.
Grandma Georgina was hilarious, and not even overdone! Very refreshing.
The Oompa-Loompas were cool, although a little hard to understand at times. I have the songs memorized, and I was confused a time or two. If that was really Deep Roy narrating, did anyone else think he sounded like Fezzik from the Princess Bride?
Not so great things about the movie:
After the beginning, it sort of seemed like they'd forgotten about Charlie, and it might as well have been called Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
The pacing got a little slow towards the middle. It felt very much like a real factory store, and people could get bored after the amazing beginning
All in all, I was quite satisfied, and considering how high my expectations were, that's saying something.
Orlando Bloom has ruined everything.
Roses are red, violets are blue, I'm schizophrenic, and so am I.

Well, I'd like to say right off the bat that I haven't read the book, as a kid or adult. I went into this movie only knowing the 1971 version with Gene Wilder, so I couldn't help but keep comparing the two films in my head while I was watching.
Overall, I thought this movie was good, but not as great as the old film. I don't think it will be as everlasting as the '71 version has been. I loved Depp's performance as Willy Wonka, but I thought he was a little too exaggerated in some parts. I liked how his backstory was unfolded and how he found the oompa-loompas.
That being said...I did not like the oompa-loompas at all. I did not like that they were played by only one ugly man and that their sequences were obviously computer generated. Good usage of CGI should not be obvious to the viewer; and a lot of the CGI in this film was definitely obvious. It took away from the fantasy if you ask me. And I didn't like the songs that the oompa-loompas sang either. They were just not as catchy as the songs from the '71 film.
Now speaking of the music, the rest of the score I really enjoyed. However, during the part where they were sailing down the chocolate river, I found myself leaning over to my sister and singing the song Gene Wilder sings from the old film:
There's no earthly way knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing
Is it raining? Is it snowing?
Is a hurricane a-blowing?
hehe I really missed that part when it came on. I didn't really expect Johnny Depp to break out into song or anything, but I did think he would be a little more animated.
It was a good film, but I'm still partial to the Gene Wilder version.
