July 14, 2002 — Box Office Mojo tells us:
'Men in Black II' dove 52% to an estimated $25 million in its second
weekend. With $133.1 million in the till after 12 days, it's already behind
the first 'Men in Black,' which had $139.6 million at the same point.
Tom Hanks demonstrated his bankability yet again as 'Road to Perdition'
bagged an estimated $22.1 million, despite playing at the least amoung of
theaters of all openers -- 1,797. 'Reign of Fire' ignited in third place
with an estimated $16 million at 2,629 sites, and 'Halloween: Resurrection'
nabbed an estimated $12.3 million at 1,954.
'The Crocodile Hunter' wrangled an estimated $10 million at 2,525 venues.
However, it could be a crock as rival studios had it pegged at not even
cracking $9 million. The picture's Friday and Saturday estimates support the
latter figure as it reportedly had a little over $6 million by the end of
Saturday.
'Attack of the Clones' tumbled 48% to an estimated $1.28 million. The drop
was mostly because it hemorrhaged a lot of theaters, plunging from 1,162 to
632. After 60 days, the prequel has pulled in $293.815 million. Many
exhibitors had an 8-week contract to run the picture, hence the exodus as
four promising titles entered the marketplace.
