July 4, 2002 — Box Office Mojo tells us:
Early estimates have 'MiB2' pegged at $19.01 million on Wednesday, the third
biggest Wednesday of all time after 'The Phantom Menace' ($28.5 million) and
'Jurassic Park III' ($19.02 million).
The first 'Men in Black' did $14 million on its first Wednesday (plus $4.8
million from midnight showings the night before) en route to a $51.1 million
Friday-to-Sunday frame and the record for the Fourth of July weekend. 'ID4'
holds the five-day Fourth of July record, though, at $85.1 million (or $96.1
million including the $11 million it did in Tuesday night previews).
'MiB2' looks like it will break both records, but it is not on track to
crack the $100 million mark by Sunday, most likely coming in at around $95
million for the five days. However, if ticket price inflation is taken into
account, it will end up behind both 'Men in Black' and 'ID4,' as their
five-day hauls would equal $100 million or more today.
Meanwhile, 'Like Mike' bow-wowed to an estimated $4 million on Wednesday,
which means it will likely score over $20 million by Sunday. 'The Powerpuff
Girls' proved not to be as phenomenal as the hype suggested. The Cartoon
Network's first theatrical feature pulled in an estimated $1.55 million on
Wednesday, pointing to around $8 million by Sunday.
