May 24, 2002 — We talked to Chris Carlisle, Vice President of Creative Affairs
at Top Cow, Inc. to see what is currently happening with The A-Team movie.
Chris tells us that the script is finished, but more re-writes are needed. They are "currently interviewing writers but not settled on
any one yet." As for the story, Chris says, "we are updating their backstory so the characters will be younger and the
story set contemporary, but the specifics of that are still being worked
out. i would expect a large part of the story takes place in LA.
We then asked Chris whether we will hear some of those favorite phrases from the 80's TV show like BA's "I pity the fool" and just how faithful the characters will remain to the source: "yes, you will hear those phrases, or something very similar to those
phrases. in our minds, the core strength of the show is in the rich
characters stephen created, and in their relationships with one another. it
is our intent to retain the essence of these characters we know from the
show, while updating and hopefully breathing some new life into them. i
think whenever one adapts source material for a movie, it's a delicate
balancing act between satisfying the existing fans and opening the world to
new fans. will you see some slight tweaks? i hope so, otherwise there's no
reason to do a movie. but will you see a character you will immediately
identify as BA? as Hannibal? yes."
No casting yet until they are happy with the script. There is also nothing yet about whether the original cast will return.
(Thanks to Chris Carlisle for answering our questions)
