I just read all 118 pages of the new "A-Team" script. The script is written by the team of Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal ("Flicka," "Mona Lisa Smile") with revisions by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas ("3:10 to Yuma," "2 Fast 2 Furious").

The story takes place in 2003, shortly before the United States' invasion of Baghdad - the classic "Shock and Awe" campaign we all remember. We meet Lieutenant Templeton "Face" Peck who is only described as a "damned good-looking man." He's at a base in the desert with a bunch of British soldiers, scamming them out of money with the help of American Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith - an older gentlemen who we learn has been divorced for six years.

They're called by General Henry Garner, a 64-year old with chopped gray hair and a golf tan. They meet their newest partner, Sgt. B.A. Baracas, who is a 22-year-old walking steel wall with two-percent body fat. Now, is it just me, or does this NOT sound like Mr. T? I mean - if we're going to replace Mr. T with someone like Tyrese then honestly, what's the point of having an "A-Team" movie?

Anyway, the three are set to sneak into Iraq before the invasion in order to help protect some priceless artifacts at the Iraqi Museum - that's where they meet Dr. Fouad Al-Mahdi, the director and protector of these ancient works of art.

Another team member shows up, ex-special forces Major Eddie Pike, who plans to assist the team get the artifacts out - except the invasion begins and the team is forced to take what they can and keep the rest safely hidden.

If you ever watched the old television show, you'll remember that the A-Team was imprisoned by its own military for a crime they didn't commit. Well - this is where that story point comes in. Apparently there isn't any record of a mission to museum and Hannibal and Sgt. Baracas are sent to prison after being ratted out by buddy Face.

Seems Face has cut a deal with Captain Thomas Lynch (who was on the tv show as well) - a 32-year-old square-jawed, pug-nosed ***** who constantly covers his own tracks and puts the blame on others. Lynch has a partner, a 23-year-old latina with 'stunning dark eye' known as Lieutenant Angel Sosa. I think the writers are screaming for Eva Mendez here, which could be a good fit.

While in prison, Hannibal and Baracas meet the last member of their team - Captain Murdock. He's been a guest in the prison's psychiatric ward for the past six months and he's bipolar with a side of dissociated identity disorder. In other words, he's perfect for the team. The three of them break out of prison and set out to right their names and make sure Face and Lynch pay.

That's the basic gist of the script, anyway. I'll be honest - it's not that tantalizing. The whole action of the movie revolves around some vases and stolen art. At one point there's a scene that takes place on a yacht - and it's an art auction. It's just not that interesting.

There are some good elements from the old show - the quote "I love it when plan comes together" is thrown around a few times, and Baracas still has a phobia of planes.

John Singleton recently signed on to direct, and he's probably a perfect fit here. As much as I would like to see a really good big-screen version of this show, it seems it won't get that kind of treatment. We could sit around all day and wish for George Clooney as Hannibal or someone like Aaron Eckhart as Face - but it's not going to happen. "The A-Team" will be like "2 Fast, 2 Furious" - but with more explosions and less import tuners. Hell, maybe he'll get Tyrese to play Baracas.

Here's to hoping there are more revisions and Mr. T is brought in - because I pity the fool who makes an "A-Team" movie without him.
