December 9, 2001 — Being an extra can be a mixture of excitement and complete boredom. Russell Crowe figured out a way to keep the excitement up for one particular scene:
Crowe actually used his Oscar to motivate 800 extras during the filming of the scene in A Beautiful Mind where Nash accepts the Nobel Prize.
He insists he didn't mean any disrespect nor was he bragging when he pulled his Oscar our from under his jacket and brandished it about. "I've done some extra work in my time and I know how difficult it is to sustain enthusiasm for long periods of time. I was doing stand-up comedy in my old age make-up between takes to keep everyone's energy up. I knew Ron needed a big cheer from the extras as a reaction when Nash holds up his Nobel plaque.
"When the cameras were all turned on them, I exchanged the Oscar for the Nobel Prize. They went wild. They got the joke and we got our reaction shot.
"We shot that reaction shot several more times, but ended up using the one I got with my Oscar for the film."
