Your question is a very good one. If he was trying to figure out whether or not Charles, Parcher, and Marcy were real, it would seen obvious to do what you suggested. But, don't forget that with Charles he cares about him because he is is best friend. Would you want to discover that your best friend was only a figment of your imagination. The same thing goes with Marcy, the little girl. He loves her and it would hurt him badly to figure out that she was not a living being. With Parcher, remember that he has a gun. Would you try to walk through a guy with a gun? Don't forget, your not sure whether or not this guy is real. It's hard to say goodbye to people you love. It would be like finding out your an orphan child and that your mother was a dillusion. Wouldn't it be difficult to accept that your mother wasn't real? I hope I answered your question.
