| What is with people and over-critiquing movies??? |
 |

I mean seriously.....this summer people and critics have really been too critical on summer movies and I'm so damn sick of it. I was just over at AICN and this 20 year old guy posted a review of Jurassic Park III and did the "crime" of saying he enjoyed watching it. These people were ripping him apart and saying that because he's only 20 he knows nothing about movies. To me, 20 year olds are the perfect people to review summer films because Summer films are primarily made for that audience. But seriously this summer and even last summer people have been real critical of films. Have we been spoiled??? Have we gotten used to such high quality that we are critical to anything that might be slightly below our expectations??
I mean when I think of summer movies I think of the Jurassic Parks, the Batman movies, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Independence Day. Movies that are not going to make you think, but movies that are made for enjoyment and for people to have a good time to watch. Some people over there are criticizing JP3 because it didn't make them think. Like the first two did?? Like any serious summer action packed film is going to make you think?? I think people have to go back to their roots and remember what it was like when they were a kid when they go to see JP3 or any summer movie. I went into Star Wars Episode I feeling like a kid going to see his first movie. Maybe that's why I enjoyed it a lot more than other people. I went into it thinking that it would be a chance to relax and have a fun two hours, and it was. Truthfully, when I look at summer films I don't think of a Schindler's List or a Saving Private Ryan, those types of films to me don't qualify in the term, "Summer Movies". They aren't the type that would be on my list to see over the big summer season either. True they make you think, but I think people forget what a big summer film is. Jaws (The first summer blockbuster) was pure entertainment. It didn't make you think. It was just a fun horror film. The reason why it is so loved is it had a smart story, but it wasn't overly complicated. People went into Jaws wanting to be scared and they were. For me, I'm going to see JP3 to be entertained.....not because I want to see a movie with a smart script and one that makes me think. I go in with the mindset of a 12-15 year old and just let the film take me away. Those are the types of films that I truly enjoy and if you think about it, those are the types of films that dominate the box office during the summer.
1975 - Jaws
1977 - Star Wars
1978 - Superman
1979 - Star Trek : The Motion Picture and Alien
1980 - The Empire Strikes Back
1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark
1982 - E.T. and Star Trek 2
1983 - Return of the Jedi
1984 - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
1985 - Back to the Future
1986 - Top Gun, Aliens
1987 - Lethal Weapon
1988 - Die Hard
1989 - Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
1990 - **** Tracy
1991 - Robin Hood : Prince of Thieves, Terminator 2 : Judgement Day
1992 - Batman Returns
1993 - Jurassic Park
1994 - True Lies
1995 - Batman Forever
1996 - Independence Day
1997 - The Lost World
1998 - The Mask of Zorro
1999 - Star Wars : Episode I
2000 - X-Men and Gladiator
These are all some of the most popular films during their respected years and they weren't films that made you think, they were films that entertained you. you didn't go into these films expecting a good story. You expected good special effects or great action sequences. These were films that made you for two hours forget all your probelms and just sit back and be taken away from everything. I think we as filmgoers need to calm down and stop looking for the greatest film possible when we go to see films like Final Fantasy, The Mummy Returns, or Jurassic Park III. We need to go in there with the mind set that we're going to be entertained and just sit back and have fun and maybe then we might not be so critical. Can you guys imagine if Superman : The Movie had come out now instead of 23 years ago?? I think we would rip it apart because there is no way a man can go around dressed in tights and spandex and have the movie still be serious by today's standards. But 23 years ago, Superman dominated the box office and got tremendous reviews. I think our expectations for summer films are too high and that maybe we should lower them. sure we can be all critical on films like Schindler's List or a Saving Private Ryan or a Braveheart, but for films that are simply made to entertain and not make you think, why be so critical if they were never intended to challenge you mentally anyway?? They are just there to take you away from your stresses, to make you feel like a kid again, and for you to have fun while you watch them.
Thanks....I'm done.

| It's not wrong, but some of the best action films are the ones that don't make you think. Die Hard, for one, Predator, another. Terminator 2, had a good story but it wasn't complicated. The fugitive on the other hand was a movie that made you think and an action film. However, I don't think of it as a Big Summer Blockbuster that everybody was highly anticipating. I think the best action films are the less complicated ones. True they should have a good story but there shouldn't be too much thought involved for the viewer or else you are going to lose your primary audience who wants to see Schwarzenegger or Willis go nuts with a machine gun. The average viewers for action films probably range from 15 to 20, and they're not going to the movies for a good story, they're looking for action. | So we are uptight critical idiots if we don't enjoy realy, REALLY bad movies? Because that is what we've been getting this summer. Except A.I. and The Mummy Returns, everything has sucked. Whether as an intelligent "film" or just mindless entertainment value. I want to see Jurassic Park III and I want to be entertained. I just hope it is better than the rather average Lost World. Sure Jurassic Park didn't require any brains, that's why it was enjoyed by people of all ages. What everyone enjoys is the action, suspense, special effects, whatever. A script doesn't exactly have to be as good as the latest pretentious foreign film that never get released in more than two theaters, but if it gets to be Tomb Raider or Battlefield Earth bad, that spoils the fun. Can Jurassic Park III even come close to the first one? I've heard, even from RELIABLE sources, that it is pretty bad. There is nothing that comes close to the suspense of being in a car in the dark, in the rain, in front of the T-Rex cage supposedly and it stars Tia Leoni who can't act and has a child that is supposed to be even more annoying than the two in the first movie. I just hope this movie doesn't disappoint. Maybe next summer we will get summer blockbusters that don't suck. "So don't get any big ideas
They're not going to happen
You'll go to hell
For what your dirty mind is thinking
And now that you found it, it's gone
Now that you feel it, you don't
You got to feel it " |
