June 18, 2002 — CountingDown scooper 'Driving Bear' caught a sneak preview of Minority Report today, and was pretty pleased with what he saw! Minor spoilers ahead. Here's the scoop:
Steven Spielberg's Minority Report is an unqualified success on many levels. It is one part sci-fi, one part action-adventure, and one part mystery. Cruise and Spielberg are able to pull off all three with little difficulty. The special effects in this movie are like nothing I have ever seen. Spielberg is able to integrate these top-notch effects without getting in the way of the story. The movie is surprisingly well written, especially in comparison to the latest sci-fi flick which rhymes with "Battack of the Mones." The audience followed the movie exactly as they should. They jumped when they were supposed to jump, they laughed when they were supposed to laugh, and on a few occasions they wern't even able to look at the screen (I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just assume that eyes are not a permanent fixture of the human body). The movie is long (well over two hours) but it is not tedious. There are enough plot twists and excitement to keep everyone occupied. So now, the real question, "should I spend $9 and go see it?" Yes. Considering the other movies opening this weekend are "Lilo and Stich" and "Juwanna Mann", this is as good as you're going to get. But don't go see it because it's the only thing there. If you enjoyed any Spielberg movie, you will enjoy Minority Report. |
