Director Frank Darabont Talks Jim Carrey

November 3, 2001 — According to this, they even borrowed sets from 'The Scorpion King':

His star attraction, meanwhile, keeps his clowning at bay. Says Darabont of Carrey, in what is being seen as yet another grab for Oscar glory: "What you are really seeing is Jim Carrey without masks and not channeling his enormous talent through Andy Kaufman. It's just him for the first time with no acting gimmicks."

Darabont got his kicks while shooting the film-within-a-film Sand Pirates of the Sahara, scripted by Carrey's character. "We have leaping flames, flashing swords, a silly Egyptian tomb." Sets were borrowed from The Mummy prequel The Scorpion King.
