| My thoughts on this movie... |
|
It is such a relief to finally see a good movie. After X-Men: The Last Stand, The Omen, Over the Hedge, and (I was expecting this next one to be bad) Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties, I had begun to lose faith in modern cinema. But, then, I saw a magnificent vision. It was of the most classic of all superheroes being directed by one of the best hero directors of our day (Bryan Singer).
At first (during the days of the teaser), I admit, I was extremely... skeptical, to say the least. I thought Superman Returns was going to be a very, very bad movie. But, thanks to a perfect cast and awesome effects and a powerful story and beautiful direction, we have a winner! I would say that it was the best film of the year, but, seriously, is that much of a challenge? This has been a terrible year for cinema thus far and, to say that Superman Returns is the best of the year is a serious understatement. To say this is among the best films I've seen in the past few years is a far closer statement to justification.
The people who know me well know that I really love three kinds of films predominantly: fantasy, dramedy, and, specifically, comic hero movies. And, they should also know that my favorites among the hero genre are the Spider-man movies, the first two X-Men (see above for my feelings on the third), and Batman Begins. Superman Returns, though distinctly its own creature, has what I love from all of those movies. Like Spider-Man, it is a beautiful and colorful movie that you never get bored in (and Superman Returns is over two and a half hours long!) and where the fight and effect sequences are just a wonder to behold. Like the X-Men movies, beyond just having pretty sets and effects, it seems to have a real message deep down at heart (X-Men's being tolerance and Superman's being the fact that the world needs a savior). Finally, like Batman Begins, Superman Returns contains interesting characters and well-developed scenarios and plot. You know what everyone is doing and why and the film doesn't drag to keep up with all of this.
Finally, I'd just like to say that every single cast member is absolutely spot on. Brandon Routh is most definitely and easily the best live-action Superman I've ever seen (which means, I like him better than Dean Cain, Christopher Reeve, George Reeves, Tom Welling, etc.). Also, Kate Bosworth, though not exactly my image of Lois Lane, plays the character well and with more subtlety than anyone in the past (Terri Hatcher might still be my favorite, but she was certainly over the top). Kevin Spacey, though probably not my favorite of all time, and probably not a perfect incarnation of the character, plays A form of Lex Luthor that picks up exactly and perfectly where Gene Hackman left off (only Spacey's a little more believable). But I'd have to say that Parker Posey as Luthor's henchwoman Kitty steals pretty much every scene she's in with air-heady one-liners like "wasn't there two of those?" (you have to know context).
Overall, I'd say that Superman Returns is not only a great summer movie, but a fantastic cinematic experience and achievement and a look into what could most assuredly be the next great franchise. Not only can I just not wait for the next installment, I can't wait to watch this one again.
PS, Bryan Singer, don't you even DARE think about leaving this series. (The Last Stand... boohoo.) |
