Over the past several years there have been a slew of superhero movies - Blade, X-Men, Spiderman, Daredevil, Catwoman, Electra, The Punisher, Batman, The Fantastic Four just to name a few. Could it be the mainstream movie-going public is growing less and less interested? When you look at the box office this past summer obviously everybody went to see Pirates of the Carribean. It's a new franchise with new characters and having a star like Johnny Depp carry the film only broadens it appeal even more. Those of us who are devoted fans of the superhero movies are always going to see them which guarantees a solid base, but beyond that is that enough for Hollywood execs to continue investing in them? When you look at how cyclical box office performance has been with these films, it becomes obvious. The first big budget Superman movie came out everybody had to see it. The first big budget Batman same thing. Then the first Spiderman movie everybody flocked to see it. Eventually though the novelty wears off and it loses its luster. The sequels make less money. So it'll be telling to see what happens with "Spiderman 3" and then "The Dark Knight". They're bound to fare better as long as a movie like Pirates isn't around, but it could be a turning point in the trend. Neither X-Men 3 or SR did the big box office either studio hoped for especially Warner. If the public obviously wants something new and original like Pirates Hollywood will take note and pull the plug on all the superhero sequels and spinoffs as well as new adaptations. Fanboys will cry and wet their pants everywhere.

we will be disappointed. Cry and wet our pants we will not. I represent the tough fanboys. Fanboy mafia. like bill gates is precieved in antitrust or the simpsons.. HA! just kidding. Seriously. That's definetly what's happening. But I choose to view it as the older generation is a bunch of lame, book reading cornballs. And comic books fans are viewed as finicky. I'm probably the only one in the world who didn't like POTC. But they'll keep investing as long as that franchise is bringing in 100M profit. it's a no brainer.

There's no lack of great Super Hero and/or ideas for Super Hero movies and their franchises.

The problem is and always has been: Hollywood.

You should change the title of the thread to:

Crappy and underwhelming Super Hero movies.

As much of the country is left stranded for Christmas due to a storm, I wonder what are their thoughts on the credibility of Global Warming? HAHA...

The problem is two-fold.

1. There have been a glut of bad superhero or very average super hero films in the last 7 years. Now Marvel was smart to get all their crap into the pipeline as quickly as they could so that when the gravy train derails, at least they would have made their money first. But bad films like Hulk, Fantastic Four, Elektra, Catwoman, Daredevil, etc... have made moviegoers gun shy.

2. Well, the gravy train seems to be derailing. Batman Begins was a very good film and it failed to rock the box office the way it should have. Now you can contribute that to the public's fear of Batman films after the Joel Shumaker debacle, but you also have to assume the public is just getting worn down by having 2-4 comic book films every year. It's like when Hollywood went nuts with Westerns in the late 50's and early 60's. They killed the genre. The only Westers made in the late 60's and 70's were made in Europe because Hollywood couldn't find a way to make a profit on them anymore.
