Yes, I do Lucas originally wrote a story that would have spanned 9 episodes all together. He then cut away the crap from the story to shorten it and it all came to fit into the 6 we are about to witness. Then, he broke that into half, with the beginning of the life of "Anakin" (Prequels) and the result of his actions (Sequels). But, as Lucas said himself, the latter section of the story seemed more interesting and since he didn't know if he could tell his entire story, he went with the half he deemed more exciting (to him). Then, inspired by the breakthrough of computer technology, Lucas decided to finish the story, now that his vision could be realized. Now he is writing the prequel trilogy. Yes, you are right that he did not have the actual screenplay written out for Episodes I, II and III, but he did have an overall idea of what they would be about. Now he is just sorting out the specifics. "May we work together in trust, free from the restraints of ego and jealousy, at this gathering and all others to come." - Plo Koon

Cool name Xanatosgirl!
Gary Kurtz has this to say on the subject:
[QUOTE]Gary Kurtz, the producer of ANH and ESB, spoke at the Sci-Fi Expo in Plano, TX a little
while ago. He shared with the crowd about meeting Lucas, leaving the Star Wars films and
the original plans for the entire saga.
Back in the early 70s, Kurtz was looking to use the new Technoscope technology in an
upcoming film. Francis Ford Coppola hooked him up with George Lucas who had recently
filmed TXH-1138 with Technoscope. Kurtz became interested in Lucas' planned American
Graffiti and the partnership was born.
When the time came to produce ROTJ, Kurtz was unhappy with the story direction Lucas
was taking. He felt that it was too much of a rehash of the first films with no real challenges.
At the same time, Jim Henson was inviting him to produce his experimental film, Dark
Crystal, which he chose instead.
Kurtz gave TPM a mixed review as he was clouded by plans made for Episode 1 back in the
early 70s. As someone involved with Star Wars from the initial concepts, Kurtz revealed the
original intentions for the nine films as they were laid out before 1980.
EPISODE 1: Was to focus on the origins of the Jedi Knights and how they are initiated and
trained
EPISODE 2: Introduction and development of Obi-Wan Kenobi
EPISODE 3: Introduction and life of Vader
EPISODE 4: There were seven different drafts of the film. At one point, they pursued buying
the rights to Hidden Fortress because of the strong similarities. At one point, Luke was a
female, Han was Luke's brother, Luke's father was the one in prison (interesting point for
some debates) and the film featured 40 wookies
EPISODE 5: Once written, the screenplay of Empire is almost exactly what is seen on screen.%0 Star Wars Dinosaur and proud of it! |

| All this talk about more than 6 episodes is pure speculation. As everyone knows, A New Hope is episode 4. Therefore, Lucas at least had a back story he decided could be broken into 3 separate movies when he wrote the original trilogy. There were no scripts for episodes 1-3, just a basic overview of the major plot devices, namely the childhood of Anakin, the clone wars, the origins of Boba Fett and the Mandalorian Warriors, the extermination of all the Jedi, and the final duel between Obi-wan and Anakin which causes Anakin to physically become more machine than man, twisted and evil. Furthermore, whoever said episodes 7-9 would be about a Jedi academy is confusing the novels with the movies, and I presume its because there is Lucas never confirmed a story for episodes 7-9 because even he doesnt know yet whatd theyd be about. The Jedi academy is a work of someone else's mind, not Lucas', and I doubt he ever intended to make episodes 7, 8, and 9. If he does ever film the third trilogy it will only be for the sake of making more money and the third trilogy would in no way compare the original and the prequel trilogies. Star Wars is great, but let's not make it like Star Trek and just see how many movies we can make before it loses its appeal. Besides if any Star Wars film has a chance of topping Empire it's Episode II, so why bother to keep trying. EP II could very well be the best one of them all, as long as Lucas learned his lessons from Episode I. No crappy childish actors (Jake Lloyd), very little Jar-Jar, and a lightsaber duel in which one of the good guys gets to use two saber's at once, I don't see how that can be topped. But then again, EP III will probably detail the extermination of all the remaining Jedi, a duel between Obi-Wan and Anakin, and Anakin's fall to the dark side, so maybe, just maybe, it will stand a chance of topping EP II. |

Lucas has said, yime and again, that SW is the story of Anakin Skywalker. That story is over. As much Ias I hate to admit it, the movies are done. And if I wrong, and he does more, I will be the happiest man alive.
As for the April fools announcement, the artical in question was an interview with either Stuff or Maxim, I can't remember; the issue was the March, April, or May one. I have the magazine, but it's at my house at school. If I remember, I'll post the exact info. on this board later. |
