In addition to a Snipes commentary and other extras, the two-disc package affords an interesting look at del Toro's attitude toward the comics-to-film medium. On one hand, his interview clips and commentary track make it clear that he's wildly passionate and has little patience for those who regard comics as an inferior art form. (With ''Blade II'' under his belt, in fact, he next plans to adapt the offbeat paranormal investigator comic ''Hellboy,'' with Bloodpacker Ron Perlman in the title role.) On the other hand, del Toro recognizes fan culture for what it is, being a card-carrying member himself. Introducing the package's deleted scenes section, he says, ''I want to apologize, because what you will see is mostly crap. But for some reason, we geeks like to buy DVDs and watch this stuff.'' Straight talk doesn't get much straighter.
