| Perhaps unsurprisingly this felt extremely un-Batman like. With snowy locations and Liam Neeson sporting a ginormous moustache, this was a very different kind of Batman flick. It's admirable that the makers-that-be have even had the balls to ressurect the concept after joel "****" shumacher single handedly destroyed it with B&R. I have to say though, Christian Bale to me will never shake off the character traits of Patrick Bateman (remove the "e"-tadaa!), and as good as he was in that film I dont buy him here. Ridding Gotham of its Gothic stylings (its only trait), and replacing it with "New York on steroids" means this city is more Spiderman than Batman. Big mistake. As is casting Tom Cruise's baby-making machine Katie Holmes as the "love-interest" - Bruce Wayne could do better lets face it. As for the suspiciously young (for his position) Scare-Crow, he was far scarier WITHOUT the silly mask and he dissapears half-way through the film. Casting Tom Wilkinson (of Full Monty fame) as a New York "gangster" was just sad, and made me wonder why not just hire an actor from New York? Whatever the Director says the fight scenes were too quick and uninvolving, and Morgan Freeman who's job just so happens to be a "maker of Gadgets and a bloody big car that sits and has no purpose-until now" stretches credibility to its fullest. I guess the fact that he had to spray-paint everything black makes up for this - not. Worse of all though, this film tries so hard to be serious, its not a lot of fun to watch. In fact I was bored throughout. Lacking the dark humour and inventiveness of Burtons visions, and the sheer perfection that is The Animated Series, this film didn't do much for me. |
