December 2, 2001 — Angelo Dundee, the man who trained Muhammad Ali and Will Smith, was impressed with Smith:
When it was first announced Smith was going to play Ali, there were those who felt he was physically wrong for the role.
Not so Dundee or Ali.
"When I first met Ali in 1960 he, too, was this tall, skinny kid. I had my doubts he would ever make a professional boxer but Ali had an incredible work ethic. He trained so hard and all that training paid off.."
Dundee says the same is true of Smith, who packed on more than 30 lbs. of muscle in one year of intensive training.
"I'd work with him for about 30 minutes before he'd get into the ring to film a fight sequence. He really got the feel of Ali's style. The Champ saw it immediately. He was so impressed by Will.
"Ali came to the set quite often."
