December 9, 2001 — Cruz plays the same role in both the original Spanish film, Open Your Eyes, and the American version, Vanilla Sky. She talks about that:
On a serious level, Cruz says she did not feel she was just tilling old soil by playing the same role in the remake. "It didn't feel like doing the same character," she says in hushed tones, her melodic voice dancing through the carefully structured sentences, her Latin accent giving each word a singular emphasis.
"It felt fresh because it is a different version of the same woman. The movies have so many things in common but, at the same time, are two different worlds. So it felt fresh from the beginning. The feeling is different because now the story is in the hands of another director. It has another father and that makes it different.
"The other one is more classical, this one is more rock 'n' roll."
