December 7, 2001 — Tom Cruise and Director Cameron Crowe made a trip to Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base to thank military personnel. From the Associated Press:
About 500 people from several military branches cheered as Cruise told troops Thursday that he appreciated the sacrifices being made by them and their families. He and Crowe then shook hands with many in the crowd.
``I wanted to come down here, first of all, to thank you,'' said Cruise, whose films include ``Top Gun,'' ``Born on the Fourth of July'' and ``A Few Good Men.'' ``As an American, I feel proud. ... And I've got a lot of admiration for what you do.''
``Vanilla Sky,'' which opens nationwide next Friday, also stars Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz. Crowe said the movie is about a man searching for what is real and what to cherish.
Some scenes show the twin towers of the World Trade Center, which were destroyed in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
``The idea of wiping them away by the computer - I couldn't do it,'' Crowe said. ``They've already been taken away once; they'll stay in the movie. Hopefully, the audience will understand it's a tribute.''
Air Force Lt. Col. Roberta Smith said Thursday's visit by Cruise and Crowe boosted morale for the troops.
