Cameron Crowe Talks Filming the Deserted Times Square Scene

SUBMITTED BY Scooby

November 3, 2001 — Cameron Crowe talks his favorite scene to film:

Crowe says that one moment stood out for him from the start, even before he began shooting. "It was Tom Cruise utterly alone in an absolutely deserted but fully electric Times Square.

"Cinematographer John Toll and I didn't want to resort to computer enhancement. We wanted to do it old-school style, and it was a puzzle that we solved only with the help of the mayor's office, the New York Film Commission and the police department. We were given a window of three hours just after sunrise on a Sunday morning in November. We arrived while it was still dark, the police cordoned off the area and, with all the neon and electricity still on, we waited until just after sunrise and shot the scene. We ended up just ahead of schedule after 10:30 a.m. Crowds were starting to form just outside the barricades. Tom signed autographs and posed for pictures, and we left on a cloud of sheer disbelief that it all worked out."

Test audiences have wondered how Crowe achieved such a convincing "computer" effect. "The shot gives me a chill every time. It opens the movie."
