Here is my thery on the film. None of my friends have seen it so I gotta share it with someone. If you haven`t seen the movie, stop reading.

Near the end, we are told there is a splice (when he passes out on the sidewalk after the crazy night out). But isn`t there another one? My thinking process is the following.

I assume there are two things we can trust in the whole movie. The opening eyes at the very end and the voices that says "Open your eyes" at the very end and the very beginning.

The first thing we hear is "Open your eyes" (assuming it is told to the eyes we see opening at the end). And then it is the whole absurd scene in an empty Time Square. (none will argue it was a dream, perhaps the dream the person who is told to open his eyes is doing.) Another "Open your eyes" stop the current dream/scene. But the eyes won`t open. And here goes my theory. So let`s still assume that the person (who open his eyes at the end) won`t open his eyes and keeps dreaming. However, for a little while, the current dream is somehow more plausible. (Because we can all have realistic or unrealistic dreams) Nevertheless, what makes me think that it is still a dream is that despite the aura of realism, there are some hints that makes me think it is still a dream. For instance. How can a life be so perfect, money, car, looks, job (wearing a hat and an untugged shirt at a conference), wouldn`t any guy dream of that. Plus, the near accident is stretched, there is a man waiting at the entrance of the buiding with fruits, juices, pastries (never seen that before, even for the wealthiest), all the girls are attractive at work, they all love him. This is the picture of male vanity, the dreams of every man alive. Plus, I don`t remember the exact words they said but, during the party held at his place, I think Cameron Diaz was talking about his penis (I saw it in French I can`t be sure) Isn`t it again a man`s dream to have girlfriend talking about their penis (with good words obviously). I believe he could afford a Monet but I doubt he would put it in such an obscur and messy room (upstairs). How about the drawing he makes, can he be that good at everything. How about Julie popping up a CD out of the blue like that? These are only a few awkward facts that I remember but a second viewing could reveal more. To add them up makes me think it was already a dream. Obviously, the remaining is so absurd that it can only be a dream. But I say it was always the same dream. Which is stopped by the last "Open your eyes" complemented by an actual pair of eyes. The eyes of the man who dreamed the whole thing. (Now he is up) Plus, I have noticed that the eyes aren`t screwed up like after the accident (and the accident has apparently occured before the said splice) So the accident never occured in real life. Finally, how about the series of pictures of unknown people we see just before the dreamer wakes up. Can`t it be glimpses of his real life.

NachoDan...IMHO..there is two endings to Vanilla Sky

1)We see that David kills himself but the whole part of life extention is just a dream so if you believe in heavan or hell, David was justing hanging around in the middle and would not let go of his soul (similar I think to the movie Jacob's Ladder), so in the end he let's go and open his eye to goto heavan. He is in peace over his part in the car crash and killing Diaz.
or
2) The whole think about this being a dream and there is a company called Life Extention and the whole explantion by the company rep in the elevator is true. He decides to wake up after 150 years of sleeping to live his life and not dream anymore. Like Benny the dog.
something to think about

Great summary of the ending, however can anyone please explain what does the title "vanilla sky" represent to the context of the film. I know it is briefly mentioned with a painting, however does anyone have a more extensive explantion concerning the title and why did'nt they just call it "Open your eyes" instead of "Vanilla sky"???????

Regarding the ending, I think David Aemes is living a dream world, and in the end he simply wakes up or starts a new dream, hence the splice. I suggest to compare this film with fight club and jacob's ladder and even the game, because all films leave the viewer questioning whether what thay saw really took place or was just a "dream" of the main character....?????

You can look at the movie in so many different ways and on so many different levels. That's what is so amazing about it. I think they called it "Vanilla Sky" simply because "Open Your Eyes" would haave been too similar to Tom's recent movie "Eyes Wide Shut."
My theory on the movie is that he really died in the New Year's Crash that he mentions killed his parents. I think the LE company is real in the movie & that his rich parents bought him (and maybe themselves) a policy. So being so young (he mentions that he was 23 when they died) of course he chooses the Lucid Dream option. In retrospect the hints abound that he was in the dream state since the start of the movie. But I don't know why the guy tells him at the end that the lucid dream started that night on the sidewalk. Maybe since it's his dream he can have people say anything? I don't know.
Another interesting FYI. I read on a Spanish website called El Mundo that a track on the movies CD that is credited to Julianna Gianni (the name of Cameron Diaz' character) is actually sung by Cmeron Diaz. I searched several music websites and there is no artist "Julianna Gianni." However, there is a band called "The Julianna Theory" and they have and album called "Realize that this is Just a Dream." What do you think about that?

I think that is hilarious. julianna theory...

I like everyone's ideas about different interpretations of the movie, and comparing it to Jacob's ladder. When I saw vanilla sky, I cried through the entire thing (I can't say exactly why) but at the very end when you hear the voice say "open your eyes" I convinced myself that it was penelope cruz' voice and that she had also had herself frozen and they would now be together. Anyone else?

Actually that was not Penelope Cruz. If you notice in the very beginning, you heard her say open your eyes in a Spanish accent, at the very end,the voice did not have a Spanish accent. I think it's just one of the L.E. staff.

I don't know about that, but she[cameron diaz] did sing I Fall Apart , the song playing in the car before the crash. Infact, David Aames even talks about Julie Gianni's singing....

Here's What I Got.

The whole movie was reality until you see David on the sidewalk. This is where the lucid dream begins.Do you see the way the sky looks? Sort of sureal and look at the way Sofia talks to David, telling him to."F******
pull himself together." This is David's idea of the perfect setting, the perfect woman .David wanted Sofia to love him despite his disfigurement.
This is why he started his lucid dream with the disfigured face instead of Pre-crash David.
I believe that there were glitches in the lucid dream which caused David's mind to play tricks on him and ulitamately caused tech support to begin showing up.Once finding out the actual truth, (Never seeing Sofia again after the club and then commiting sucide)though he loves Sofia a great deal
David deciedes to lead a new life versus spending an eternity with Sofia because,he wanted something real not something he knows was made up.When he falls from the building that foreshadows that that he will wake from his dream(We all had that falling from building dream, and eventually we wake up.)Thus, his "New life" begins no,recollection of his past.
Who knows in this life he might meet Sofia again and rekindle the relationship.
