Here is my thery on the film. None of my friends have seen it so I gotta share it with someone. If you haven`t seen the movie, stop reading.
Near the end, we are told there is a splice (when he passes out on the sidewalk after the crazy night out). But isn`t there another one? My thinking process is the following.
I assume there are two things we can trust in the whole movie. The opening eyes at the very end and the voices that says "Open your eyes" at the very end and the very beginning.
The first thing we hear is "Open your eyes" (assuming it is told to the eyes we see opening at the end). And then it is the whole absurd scene in an empty Time Square. (none will argue it was a dream, perhaps the dream the person who is told to open his eyes is doing.) Another "Open your eyes" stop the current dream/scene. But the eyes won`t open. And here goes my theory. So let`s still assume that the person (who open his eyes at the end) won`t open his eyes and keeps dreaming. However, for a little while, the current dream is somehow more plausible. (Because we can all have realistic or unrealistic dreams) Nevertheless, what makes me think that it is still a dream is that despite the aura of realism, there are some hints that makes me think it is still a dream. For instance. How can a life be so perfect, money, car, looks, job (wearing a hat and an untugged shirt at a conference), wouldn`t any guy dream of that. Plus, the near accident is stretched, there is a man waiting at the entrance of the buiding with fruits, juices, pastries (never seen that before, even for the wealthiest), all the girls are attractive at work, they all love him. This is the picture of male vanity, the dreams of every man alive. Plus, I don`t remember the exact words they said but, during the party held at his place, I think Cameron Diaz was talking about his penis (I saw it in French I can`t be sure) Isn`t it again a man`s dream to have girlfriend talking about their penis (with good words obviously). I believe he could afford a Monet but I doubt he would put it in such an obscur and messy room (upstairs). How about the drawing he makes, can he be that good at everything. How about Julie popping up a CD out of the blue like that? These are only a few awkward facts that I remember but a second viewing could reveal more. To add them up makes me think it was already a dream. Obviously, the remaining is so absurd that it can only be a dream. But I say it was always the same dream. Which is stopped by the last "Open your eyes" complemented by an actual pair of eyes. The eyes of the man who dreamed the whole thing. (Now he is up) Plus, I have noticed that the eyes aren`t screwed up like after the accident (and the accident has apparently occured before the said splice) So the accident never occured in real life. Finally, how about the series of pictures of unknown people we see just before the dreamer wakes up. Can`t it be glimpses of his real life.
