October 5, 2001 — Director John Dahl talked to Anderson Jones about 'Joy Ride'. Among the things Anderson found out:
The movie had been delayed and reshuffled since early this year, sending out whiffs of doubt. Remarkably, however, the final product is coherent, suspenseful and a solid character study of two brothers on opposite ends of the moral spectrum.
Dahl blames the delays on reshoots, rescheduling and plain old bad luck. For example, Ride was dubbed Squelch until...
"We realized most people didn't know squelch was a word," says Dahl with a laugh, explaining that the squelch knob on a CB radio lowers static interference. "Also, "squelch" isn't really ever used in the film, so we didn't really explain it in the movie either. It just seemed like this weird word, and people were troubled by it."
