I sat through Memento 12 times in the last five months, after I bought the DVD out of pure curiosity. I've come to believe that Chris Nolan, the mastermind of the film; direction and script, is a genius in filmmaking.
Last night I saw 'Following' the film he did before Memento went big. It wasn't close to as orignal as Memento (which was unparalled) but still a VERY good rental. It's shot in B/W, runs for 1 hr 45 mins, and each minute amounts to more. The ending leaves you scratching your head, after there was murder, sex, and sheer drama driving the film onward. It's a quiet film, that in the sense it's hard to put your finger on what was so good about it- I'm still not sure. "Following" is a tale of a lonely man who starts to follow strangers out a curiosity and says, as a writer, it imspires new characters. (Seems a bit of a lie) He's caught by a man as he sits in a cafe. This man offers him a partnership in burglary. It seems a simple task of just breaking and enterting with ease. (Or so it seems) The marks are picked with a mystreious planning behind it.... like they picked certain places for a reason, but that's not revealed till the end. The lonely guy meets with this girl who's involved with a dangerous criminal, after watching her for several days. The two grow close, as time wares on. Before he knows it, he's involved in a plot against himself, and invevidably gets charged with murder. Who gets murdered? I'm not telling.
It may sound bland, or even boring, but let me assure you, if you liked Memento you'll like this one. The only difference really is that Memento is bolder, stronger. Following is more of a muted, mysterious film.
Memento: A+ Following: B+
This May, Nolan releases his first big-budget film starring Al Pacino- and I'm already sold. For more, check the "Insomnia" CD: Click Here
